Prospect Highlight - Skal Labissiere

Post#1 » by graymule » Thu Sep 24, 2020 9:30 pm

:D

I know. He's already a Hawk. Still, he is pretty much unknown to most of us who only follow Atlanta and not all the NBA teams.
He has been one of ours for a while, yet he's never played as a Hawk. Reports from the current workouts is that he's there and looking good.

As we consider all the wonderful draft picks to choose from and all the free agents we would like to see in a Hawk uniform, don't completely ignore Skal. (He's our answer to Luka!) Seriously, he's kinda like Luka, just not as good. We can dream! keep watching!

Yeah seems like he’s getting a contract.

Only issue I have with Skal is his injury concerns. He's the optimal backup center: young, cheap, and could start in a pinch.

Hopefully Chelsea Lane can keep him healthy.

Travis really, really likes this player. Seems that Lloyd is finding him to be to his liking too. I was kinda joking when I compared him to Dallas' All star that we traded to them for Trae & Cam.

Still, keep an eye on Skal and see that he does have some of the same skills. May be like comparing the family sedan to a hot sports car. But, remember. Both get you from point a to point b. Both these players have that soft touch, can score from near and far, have the ability to take over a game for a brief period and are well liked by their team.

Skal is a free agent. If we don't sign and keep him, I, for one, will be sorely disappointed.

Props GM. You’ve always backed this cat. Hope he gets a shot.

I believe we keep Skal. Now, if we could draft Haliburton to back up Trae and play a little #2 guard - - Wow!
Let's see if the Hawk brain thrust can agree with this old man.

Wondered why Skal speaks French. Haiti is French and Creole. Capela is Swiss. Swiss speak German, French and Italian depending on the canton. French is good. Maybe add Hayes and make it Les Hawks lol

I've always liked Skal ever since he became a Hawk. One reason we got him was his injury. Seems to have finally healed.
In my opinion, Skal will look like a steal by Travis this season. And, he has told us that he wants to be here.

Perhaps part of the genius is not just in acquiring Skal for nothing, but in acquiring an RFA, which inherently then allows Schlenk to go just above the cap threshold so that the team can also use the MLE and possibly the Bi-Annual exception as well... which then... allows for another ~$12.5m that can be used to fill-out the roster beyond the ~$49m of cap space at-hand.

Gray, while it's true that Skal's cap hold is $7m (as mrhonline indicated on another board where I do not currently participate), for the reason stated above, I disagree that his situation will be resolved earlier than later in the free agency period.

To the contrary, it seems more likely that Schlenk will have most of his FA negotiations completed, if not all, and shortly after Skal is signed, the last couple of roster slots will be filled using the MLE. I'm less certain that we can use the Bi-Annual, though, because unless I've misunderstood, I believe that is reserved for teams that were not already over the cap and have never dipped under it.

(And. The proverbial monkey wrench, of course, may be that someone makes an offer that we have to match before we really want to put him on our books.)

First order of business: Renounce rights to DeAndre’ Bembry, Damian Jones, Skal Labissiere, Charlie Brown Jr.

This is just a formality. None of these players will receive a contract offer that is worth more than the qualifying offer, which is around $3.5 million for Jones and Labissiere and $3.7 million for Bembry. Each of these players likely will sign for the minimum or close to that dollar amount, so it makes no sense to extend the qualifying offer to hold their restricted rights.

Again. Seems to me he and others are missing the boat on why you hold on to an RFA, ie, it allows you to tip-toe over that cap threshold, and gain the capacity to sign more with the MLE. Otherwise, you have to make a trade, and that may or may not be something desirable.

For the record (I'm mrh), I agree that Skal won't actually sign until later in the offseason for cap-maximizing reasons, but I think the fact he is re-signing will be announced/leaked early.

I think Skal's presence at training is an indication there's already a gentleman's agreement in place. They will likely have spoken to his agent at the trade deadline.

Good luck to Skal.
