I think there might be some merit to it if you believe the reporting that the ownership didn't want Lue and Brand didn't want D'Antoni and so they compromised on Doc. Assuming all of that is true, one reason Brand might not have wanted D'Antoni is because it would have required significant roster changes which would likely only have highlighted what a historically awful job Brand did last offseason.

Roster changes like a Horford trade. Or Tobias (who Brand blew all his capital and cap on). Jumping to an Embiid trade or a Simmons trade seems fully at odds with how ownership has wanted to keep both and how ownership was impressed with MDA.

And the idea that keeping Embiid and Simmons makes a team not going anywhere...
