The honest truth is, swapping Johnson for the TPE is a big help to both teams. For MIN, Johnson is not worth his $16 mil contract. For GSW, there aren’t many great players that can fit into the $17 mil Iguodala TPE. However, if they trade for Johnson (and I ran through all the possibilities, and he is the best player for this role), his expiring can bring back a player who makes 125% of his salary plus $100,000. This opens up a whole range of options that they are locked out of with just the TPE, including Rozier, LaVine, THJ, Gary Harris, Miles Turner, Sabonis, Fournier, Bogdanovic and Aaron Gordon. But you know, MIN would like access to these players too.
Many Wolves fans want to stick it to GSW since they need Johnson. However, we are never going to get a better offer for Johnson than a full TPE. This adds value to MIN. I think the two teams should make the deal straight up, with neither team trying to get over on the other. This deal helps them both get over on the other 28 teams.

In a vacuum this trade is a no go. Now if were looking at next deal or two ahead then TPE along with Steipen rule not being a concern because we have a 2021 pick guaranteed opening up next move 17 this year for a 2021 unprotected could be beneficial.
