Are you referring to the dec 9 2019 game. Howard and McGee played 33 minutes. They were guarding Jokic
Like I said. AD doesn’t guard Jokic often. It’s very selective. He’s hiding and saving his energy.
He is a great WEAK SIDE defender which I am not contesting. Your video even states it.
The key with AD is to wait for bigger centers to get tired. Let Howard or even 6 foot 8 Julius randle on pelicans to the dirty work. Than AD gets to play some defense when the big centers get tired
But AD does not like to expend energy on defense especially early on.
Well, compare him to the alternative, not to the almighty. who's a better defensive big man? arguably Embiid? AD is the best two-way big man, period. That requires energy. O also disagree with the presumption that banging with a big requires more energy than flying around chasing guards. He's moreso avoiding excessive contact. Most of his injuries in NO were contact and attrition injuries as opposed to anything structural. I think having other bigs bang with dudes for 82 games was absolutely the right move. Consider how Embiid burns out every year.
You are exactly correct on embiid. He wears down in the 2nd half. I’ve watch games where embiid utterly manhandles AD. Just utterly. It’s no contest. AD gets smart. He goes hides. Lays off and guards the weakest half court offensive player (Ben Simmons). As embiid gets tired. Magically AD feels he can guard embiid in the 4th quarter. He’s letting Julius randle guard embiid saving fouls.
Embiid gets a ton of slack when he takes plays off on defense these days. You can’t play two way hard as a true center these days. And that’s why AD doesn’t like to guard true bigs. And yes. Someone posting you up. The short burst of energy against a 300 pounder leaning against your body takes a lot more strength and energy than jogging and semi reacting to a small guard in a pick and roll. First there is energy expenditure to fight to defend your spot in the post to try to not allow the post guy their spot. That saps energy. Once the post player get the ball. It’s pound pound pound. Defending your group. Or would like to roam around the perimeter. Pick your choice?
AD takes a ton of plays off. That’s why I watch entire games. When you watch entire games. You see how he’s conserving energy. Whatever works for him.
Like I said. I got nothing against AD. He’s. A great weak side defender. He’s just not a center.
Tim Duncan wasn’t afraid to bang with shaq at shaq peak. AD is afraid to bang consistently with the leagues best bigs. Jokic and embiid. Because AD is not a center.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with what Ad is doing. Just don’t call him a center. He’s not especially on the defensive end.

I lost count of how many times Jimmy passed up a shot going to the rim because he was scared of AD blocking his shot. A number of those possessions ended up in bad shots for the Heat because the shot clock was winding down. This graphic is a classic example of people making assumptions about a game without actually watching it.

AD has played 60% of his time at center since the playoffs have begun, which means he's guarding centers. Of course, Houston doesn't have a center. I guess you can argue he's more Draymond than Gobert?
The McGee/Howard at the 5 thing isn't as much for AD as you think. It's just for optionality. The Lakers can go small, but they don't like starting small. It's an energy drain on everyone, not just AD. Hence why the death lineup wasn't the main lineup. I mean, it's not like McGee is some stellar defensive center. He gets tossed around like a ragdoll. And Dwight's only in there for short bursts and literally can't play any other position.
Also, bringing up Duncan works against you. Duncan was a power forward, not a center either. AD will play the majority of his minutes at C when he's old, too.

But it is when a 6 feet 10 PF/C wants to guard a star perimeter player during the nba finals.

It's still not, AD didn't just appear overnight in the finals. Everybody is well aware of what he can do defensively and everybody knows he can guard perimeter players.
