Extensions definitely bring something different to the game. I definitely believe they were necessary after playing the sim in year one. Draft picks would be so devalued without them there would be almost no incentive to hold your picks.

As far as the actual numbers go, they are a bit misleading. If you look at Luka and his $90/5 deal it’s obviously low. But in reality, Indiana paid him an additional $399 for those extra three years. $133 a year for three years is still low for a player like Luka but it’s better than what you see ($90) on his team page. Not all draft picks get that extension because the cost will still add up.

Basically it gives teams a chance to get something from their picks if they hit on their pick. That’s still the trick though, Luka is generational, how many players in this year lottery will get an extension in the next year or two regardless of the lower cap number?

Either way if I wanted to trade him It'd make more sense to hold off extending him because some teams may not have cap room to take on his extended contract. There are a couple of interesting trade packages out there.
