But you are missing my point. Nevermind GM A. How about GM B getting screwed cuz GM C, D, or E took his guy. All because GM A allowed himself to be skipped and since GM B doesn't have the funds to take advantage, he loses a target to a GM behind him. While GM A goes unpunished cuz he didn't wanna pay for the slot he was in anyway, yet he still gets a player of his liking.
Just tie picks to the salary slot. Why all the overcomplication?
its also not a knock on anyone. But as we were talking and going back and forth early it was brought to our attention that with the way we currently do it (which seems unlikely) but could still happen someone can manipulate there draft slot for cap space purposes. Most discussed and agreed this is a bad faith tactic. A small amendment could fix this issue that seems like nearly every GM would be on board with because it doesn't hurt anyone but the team sitting on the pick. So seems like the most straight forward amendment ever. Does anyone think there is one bad thing to tie the draft slot with the $? I can't see one objection.
On my phone and still at work but it’s obviously not going to wait. Lol
The reason the salary is tied to the slot is for the player. He gets paid based on where he was selected. I know they aren’t real players with families but it has consequences down the line. People talking about Luka and his low salary. If he was picked with the sixth slot instead of the third due to skipped picks it would throw off the competitive balance even further. Salary needs to go with where the player was picked.
This has been our rule since the draft year one and obviously it seems no one knew about it except Context because it hasn’t been an issue even though I’m 99.9% positive I’ve written basically the same thing both years in the draft preview.
Just because this years draft is a bit different in the fact that there is no consensus doesn’t mean the rule should be changed. If you have the third pick and want to pick third you can absolutely get the third player selected at that salary slot and you will not have to sit at your computer all day to do it. Simply give me a two person list when you’re on the clock.
I’ll use Hoffa as an example since this all started with him even though he has said he isn’t truly planning on getting skipped. If 10AM rolls around and no pick is posted, the Spurs go on the clock. If “SKIPPED” has been placed in the draft thread, San Antonio has the choice of making their pick immediately thus incurring the second player drafted salary. They can wait their two hours to see if Hoffa makes his pick. Or they can give me a two person list telling me they want the third pick that they were entitled too. I get that it could get sticky for that team if four hours has gone by without Hoffa making his pick and then the Pistons get on the clock. In that case the Pistons would have the option of picking the second player and paying the second salary slot and the Spurs would get their player in the third slot. Could it happen that the Pistons take the player that the Spurs wanted? Of course it could happen...but if they’re willing to pay the extra money that the Spurs aren’t for that player then why shouldn’t they get him?
This has never happened in two years and I don’t expect it to happen this year. Teams have almost always drafted well ahead of their time slot. We generally run 3-4 picks early throughout the first round. But just in case it does happen, then yes, a team may have to balance the “do I really want the player or do I really want the salary?” It is supposed to be a benefit to the team that jumps ahead to get their choice of player, but only if they want it. No one is forced to wait all day, miss their pick, or pick early incurring the extra salary.
A team that wants to manipulate the draft to move down for a lower salary can do so at anytime. They lose out on the player if they chose to do so. I don’t see the benefit from this for that team. Since I’m on my phone and not able to search I can’t say for sure but I’m almost positive that Sacramento and Washington made a trade where they just flip flopped spots earlier this summer due to salary purposes. It could’ve been argued then that the draft was manipulated with that trade but no one said anything at the time. And like I said, this has been done this way in the NFL.
Finally, like cap said, if a team does get skipped, the next three teams up could conceivably work together to force the nbadraft mock to make that selection. That would be win win considering what most people here think of that mock.
