Look at Major League Baseball, the starting pitchers only pitch a few innings, we possibly won't ever see a 300 win pitcher again, and rarely a complete game. Not trying to go off topic by mentioning another sport but it's the best example I can give.

The key to load management is to get the players that do play to not let up because others aren’t playing. Unless you team culture is really good, I think the tendency is for load management of a key player to be a signal to the rest of the team that this game is not that important. Your baseball example is a good one also in that look at how many guys throw high 90s now compared to before. It’s heading toward maximizing performance over shorter intervals.
