Mike D'Antoni reportedly believes he'll be a finalist for the head coaching spot in Indiana.
The Pacers are expected to make a formal hiring by the end of this month, with D'Antoni and a few others coming in for second interviews. D'Antoni has also been linked to Brooklyn, possibly joining Steve Nash as an assistant coach on his staff, but he would probably prefer a head coaching role. If he is installed as Indiana's new head coach, it's possible Domantas Sabonis could take a hit, but it would be fun to see T.J. Warren and a healthy Victor Oladipo run free in his system.

Do you think any of these candidates will be trusted to build a coaching staff? If not, how likely is it that one of the candidates Pritchard interviewed for head coach (Craig, Quinn, Hammon, Billups, Ham) could wind up as the Pacers' Associate Head Coach, considering Finch is the favorite?

From what we generally see around the league, this won't happen. Rarely does someone who interviewed for the head job take the associate head job under the eventual winner, unless generally there's a belief that the head coach won't last long for age. This happened recently in Cleveland with Beilein/Bickerstaff, and I think in LA with Vogel/Kidd. It's rarely a comfortable fit for the head coach, as they see the other coach as a possible usurper they have to watch out for. It's doubly tough when it's both "up and comers" in the respective positions. Generally, an "up and comer" young coach will have a grizzled older veteran coach as their "associate head coach" as Nate was to Vogel. A grizzled older veteran coach will have a younger associate head coach as an unofficial "head coach in waiting" kind of set up. In theory, the Miami Heat assistants might be willing to tag up, but I doubt Miami would let both leave for Indy, and only allow the one that takes the promotion to head job to leave, but not allow the assistant to leave for a lateral assistant job, too.

I think the only part you can take to the bank is that there has been an interview. Still it's good to know who has been talked to and who hasn't yet.

I’m pretty excited about the new hire, probably due to the suspenseful nature of the search.

That's kind of my gut, but who knows. It all might depend on who the head coach wants to bring along (think of how Jim O'Brien got Frank Vogel a student manager job at UK, and then as video guy in Boston, promoted in Boston, and then brought him along to Philly and Indy as assistant coach, or how Ty Lue has Chauncey Billups lined up, etc), as well as how many coaching spots the owner is willing to pay (Lakers had 6 this past year, we had 3). Might also depend on who the owner or GM wants brought along too. Remember, Bird once made Frank Vogel find seasoned veteran coaches like Brian Shaw as assistants before he had the interim removed from his head coaching title here.

If it's going to be a battle of the relatively unknown between Finch and Craig, I think Craig has the edge.
He's dynamic, he's loud, and has an extensive experience working with Spo and Pat Riley. Not to mention, he was an assistant coach in Team USA's 2018 minicamp that had Vic and Myles as participants.

It also sounds like Steve Simon, Herbs son and alternate governor for the Pacers, is starting to take more activity in the Pacers operations and this job hiring. Could be that D’Antoni is maybe Herb’s favorite and the younger guys are David’s favorites? Historically, Herb has favored experienced head coaches in his Hirings, former players with name value, or in house promotions.

Being dynamic can have its pluses, and experience is a good thing, but being "loud" would not make my top ten list of traits to look for.
