Andrew Wiggins: turning straw into gold or always been a star in the making?
If the Warriors keep Wiggins and they win a championship will it be a case of turning straw into gold or will it mean Wiggins was always going to turn out to be a star eventually?

It means Wiggins went along for the ride. You don't have the correct answer up there.

Hoping GSW can fix what ails AW but he has a lot of bad habits to break and no real high level skill beyond athleticism.
How about an “along for the ride” option?

He doesn't need to be a star for the Warriors to win it. Play good defense, move off the ball, set screens, don't shoot too much to take away from the Splash Brothers and make wide open shots.

We all agree that D’Angelo Russell leans towards being overpaid, unless his production improves, right?
Very good. Now let’s remember that Minnesota traded a top three protected pick (which becomes unprotected) to turn Andrew Wiggins into D’Angelo Russell. Keep in mind, this only happened because Golden State ended up settling for this deal.
I watched the dude for six years, the concept of this thread is legitimately ludicrous. Best of luck to him, I hope he thrives in Golden State, but come on now.

The “can Wiggins be a star?” ship has sailed at this point, IMO.
The “can Wiggins be an effective role player?” question has yet to be answered.
If he can give GS something in the neighborhood of what Harrison Barnes gave them, then the trade is a huge win, as it will have netted them an effective role player on the wing (that they desperately need) and a high value asset (the 2021 top 3 protected MIN pick).

Ask yourself the same question except change the team the lakers and change the player to kuzma. What did you come up with?

If they win with wiggins, it will be because he plays a major role, even if it doesn’t result in a title. He plays the most important position on the court. If he isn’t up to par offensively he will get exploited, and if he isn’t good enough on defense, he will get picked on. The warriors aren’t going to be good enough to have a 30 million dollar player not pulling his weight

Andrew Wiggins has never had a positive BPM in his career. His best ever WS/48 is a terrible 0.069.
He's only a few months younger than 2x MVP Giannis. It's time to accept Wiggins has never been a good pro and most likely never will. If he ever wins a ring it's not going to be as an important part of the team.

That last part is looking at the acquisition in a vacuum, which really doesn’t make sense.
Even if Wiggins is able to be an effective role player (he won’t be a star), he’s going to be massively overpaid.
That said, GS didn’t sign him to a deal in FA. When KD opted to sign with the Nets, the Warriors were massively over the cap, so their options were...
1) Get nothing.
2) Do a S&T to mildly overpay Russell and retain KD’s large salary spot over the cap.
They opted for #2, then flipped Russell for the overpaid Wiggins AND a top 3 protected 2021 pick. When you’re as far over the cap as GS is, your options for improving the team are limited, so you have to get creative and take calculated risks.
I’ll take that potentially VERY valuable pick and gamble on Wiggins being able to transform into an effective role player over absolutely nothing, especially when it’s Joe Lacob— not me— that is cutting Wiggins those checks and paying that lofty repeater tax.

All they have to do is force him to hustle. The athletic tools are all there. His handles, shooting and decision making are all sus enough that he will never be an on-ball star. But if Golden State gets him to commit to a specific role: get out in transition, try hard on defense, shoot when you're open, attack the basket hard when the situation calls for it; Andrew Wiggins could easily be a useful piece. It's easy to picture Golden State holding Wiggins accountable more than Minnesota ever did. He's a hardworking good boy.

People are going to be surprised at how well he does there. Andrew isn’t as bad as he used to be.

If Wiggins had Butler’s motor he’d be an all star level talent.
But he doesn’t.

Wiggins will far more likely be the reason GS doesn't win a championship.
There is a small chance he buys into a specific role where he tries hard on defense always and occasionally gets plays on offense and ends up taking 12 shots a game. The chance I think is 1%. GSW are more likely to move him on.

He also lacks either the requisite ball-handling or shooting skills that the top guys have. His only elite tool is his athleticism. He's much closer to 2015 DeRozan versus a Jimmy Butler or Paul George.

That spin move tho...
I think Wiggins falls in line behind Steph, Klay and Dray. His salary here is meaningless relative to the Warriors cap situation and locker room dynamics.
If the Warriors win it's because Wiggins helped; nothing more, nothing less.

You just made a list of things that you want Wiggins to do, but none of them are actually strengths or things he’s done in the past. Not one.
