Masai's draft history w the raptors

Post#1 » by NotMyKawhi » Sat Oct 17, 2020 5:43 pm

2014 draft, fail! I know we had the 20th pick but Clint Capela, Rodney Hood, Bogdan, spencer Dinwiddle, jerami Grant, Jokic, clarkson, Dwight Powell. That was a deep draft and he missed imo

2015- Grand slam. The only guy I'd take instead of D wright would be Powell or Montrez harrell. We also picked powell.

2016- Grand Slam. I'd take Sobonis and lavert over Poeltl but that's it before the 27th pick where we got Pascal. Also signing FVV

2017- Grand Slam. Not one single player taken after OG would I want more than OG

2018- no picks

2019- Grand slam. TD undrafted

One mistake really, and I think it had a lot to do w missing out on Giannis the year before. That's why he picked bruno

I don’t think you can call 2013 a mistake. Colangelo didn’t leave him with any picks that year. According to reports, he tried to get into the draft to select Giannis but the Bucks took him higher than projected.

Career Win Shares, Draft Ranking:

2014
Bruno Caboclo 30th (drafted 20th)
DeAndre Daniels 54th (drafted 37th)

2015
Delon Wright 10th (drafted 20th)
Norman Powell 15th (drafted 46th)

2016
Pascal Siakam 2nd (drafted 27th)
Jakob Poeltl 5th (drafted 9th)
Fred VanVleet 7th (Undrafted)

2017
OG Anunoby 6th (drafted 21st)

2018
N/A

2019:
Terence Davis: 4th (Undrafted)
Dewan Hernandez: 42nd (Drafted 59th)

With only 1 lottery pick, he's chosen/signed the equivalent of 6 lottery picks, including 3 of the top 7 most productive players from the 2016 draft.

I am going to disagree about his picks to some degree. Missing on Sabonis and Harrell were huge mistakes.

Wright was an old non shooting PG who has barely carved out a career as a back up while Harrell was a need and a known player.

Sabonis was such an obvious fit in Toronto who had JV at the time.

The problem with Masai is that his picks are low offensive production role players which are not that marketable. Toronto values their players way higher than the rest of the league.

San Antonio saved TO from mediocrity. They could have had Brandon Ingram rather than Jakob Poeltl. It is pretty crazy how bad the Spurs hosed themselves.

That would be Josh Hall, Mane type, etc. type of high risk high reward prospects, I suppose.
Otherwise, we are seeing low risk low reward from those projection.

They would've moved on from DeRozan regardless of Kawhi being available. In that scenario who knows what happens, where they draft and what else they get for trading Lowry, JV and Ibaka.

Siakam
Anunoby
Van Vleet
Powell
Wright
Poeltl
Davis II

Solid young core. Probably add 1 or 2 FRPs in both 2018 & 2019 too. They'd be in a pretty similar spot to now minus the chip of course.

I wanted Sabonis as well but every serious scout had Jakob ahead of him in draft rank.

There are no GMs in any sport that get the best pick every time. It isn’t realistic.

This is insane. Nice summary.

And I'll repeat this every thread somebody brings an argument like this up because it's so flawed: "missing" on a player who turned out to be great (especially out of the lottery) is a ridiculous criticism because literally (i.e. because of math), every GM can be made to look like a fool if that's the criteria.

Nobody wins against the field.

He's the best drafting executive along with Connelly, Buford, and Riley.

I don't think you understand how difficult it is to find gems if you don't have a lottery pick.

Yeah Masai had some misses, but his ability to find gems deep in the draft is arguably the best in the league alongside Riley and Buford.

2016 was just an amazing draft for Masai.

He basically got two top 5 picks for us while we were already a 56 win team that made the conference finals. Unbelievable.

If we get another similar draft this year along with the guys we have already and maybe a key free agent next year we should be right up there.

I know this draft is weak but getting another mid first rounder for norm should be possible and add some more youth and talent.

95-98 when we got Damon, Camby, Tmac and Vince with Isiah and Grunwald is the best drafting run in franchise history.

But what Masai did from 2015-2017 with one lottery pick (which he traded for) is an easy number two.

BCs draft run from 09-12 of Derozan, Davis, JV, and Ross was solid also. But with four lottery picks it's hard to compare.

The Babcock/BC special or Araujo, Villanueva, Graham and Bargnani is the worst easily. A few points for PJ Tucker but doesn't matter much since they cut him.

I don't think it's only about who was drafted, but how the players improved: coaching, development, work environment, teammates.

Maybe Siakam and FVV wouldn't have reach their current levels if they were playing in a different team.

Instead of finding diamond in the rough, find a way to change rough into diamond ?

Having a good coaching staff is a good investment (more cost-effective than buying draft pick of overpay a veteran)

Sorry for my bad english.
"But the thing is, maybe I do want to wake up one morning and say, `Baby, let's go to the Bahamas. Today.' That costs money. So what if I want to do that?

nah, Masai is better. Isiah thomas drafted Damon, Camby and Tmac.

Glen drafted Vince, bosh and mo pete..only two good picks. two of those were no brainer top 5 picks.

He usually traded away 1st round picks or took guys like Michael bradley or Kareem rush

Trash GM. We'd have been much better off if Pooh_Jeter was running our team.

I still remember the moment Masai drafted Bruno over Cappella and immediately thinking that we missed out on a gem. Capella and JV would've been an awesome big man duo, or a Rodney Hood would've filled a need at the wing. I remember there were heavy rumours about Masai chasing after Tyler Ennis too. And looking back, there were a number of good to great nba players drafted after Bruno too. Bogdanovic, Kyle Anderson, Cappella, Hood, Jokic, Dinwiddie, Powell, Clarkson, Joe Harris, Jerami Grant.

Aside from Bruno and Poetle, Masai's picks have been great.
