Look at Pelinka trying to slide through a loophole. Worth a try I suppose.

His original contract expired unfortunately for LA

Just curious but I would think the cap experts working for the Lakers would have thought of all this before applying, no?

You dont get what you dont ask for. You also dont always get what you ask for.

True enough. I'm curious with Deng's attempt to revive his career and then falling short with Minny changed some of the nuances of the application.

Yah i cant tell how that will work or if the NBA will rule it a medical retirement.

If Mozgov got it, there shouldn’t be any reason for the exemption to not apply for Deng.

5 mil more cap space might keep the 3rd superstar FA 2021 plan somewhat alive if the cap doesn’t crater due to CoVid.

Will the extra 5 million in cap space matter much?

Josh Smith played another 113 games for 3 more different franchises though.

It seems as if the Lakers are using the Magic stretch-waiving Mozgov as a precedent.

Seeing as Deng never got to the 25 NBA game threshold. It's the same as Mozgov never getting to the 25 NBA game threshold.

This season it means 5 mil more before luxury tax implications set in.

Next summer, Lakers will have 5 mil more in pure cap space. If the cap projections remained the same (125 mil cap), the Lakers would have roughly 35.8 million instead of 30.8 million.

Not all that far off of the 30% of the cap for 7-9 year vets such as Giannis (37.5 mil).

They can't. This would open an insane can of worms for stretched and bought out bums.

What's interesting here is, if the Lakers are able to get this money off the book, it gives them the wiggle room to use the full MLE and bi-annual exception - assuming KCP stays in the $10MM range.

The team can apply to have the player's salary excluded starting on the first anniversary of the player's last regular season or playoff game, and not before the one-year anniversary of the first regular season game for which the player was on the team's roster under his current contract. If the player played in fewer than 10 games in the last season in which he played, the team can apply on the one-year anniversary of the player's last regular season or playoff game, or 60 days after his last game in the current season, whichever is later.

The determination as to whether an injury or illness is career ending is made by a physician jointly selected by the league and players association, or by a Fitness to Play panel (see question number 62). The determination is based on whether the injury or illness will prevent the player from playing for the remainder of his career, or if it is severe enough that continuing to play constitutes a medically unacceptable risk.

If the injury exclusion is granted, the player's salary is removed from the team salary immediately.

If the player later "proves the doctors wrong" and resumes his career, then his salary is returned to the team salary when he plays in his 25th game1 in any one season, for any team. This allows a player to attempt to resume his career without affecting his previous team unless his comeback is ultimately successful.2 If the 25th game was a playoff game, then the player's salary is returned to the cap effective on the date of the team's last regular season game (i.e., the returned salary counts toward the luxury tax).

There are a few additional nuances to the salary exclusion:

If the player resumes his career and his salary is returned to the team salary, the team can re-apply for the salary exclusion under the same rules (including the rules for the waiting period).
If a player retires, even for medical reasons, his team does not receive a salary cap exception to acquire a replacement player.
A team can only apply for salary exclusion during the original term of a contract. If the player was waived and his salary stretched (see question number 64), the team must apply for the salary exclusion before the contract's original end date.

NBA contracts running in 19-20 have not expired yet. Typically, in a normal season they expire on June 30th, the day before free agency. This is why the Lakers can apply for it. If they don’t get it, it will be because of other factors and not Deng’s contract expiring.

But the Sudanese-born Deng is not waiting for the end of his playing days for his next big score. He’s been investing in real estate almost since the time he entered the league in 2004 and has amassed an impressive portfolio—hotels, resorts, condos and apartment buildings—worth $125 million.

I doubt he's going to be interested in coming back

Or all those “championships*” the Celtics won in the 60s against a Mickey Mouse League haha. That’s probably the biggest laugh.

Keep living off the past though.

Why didn't the Bucks apply for this in 2016 or 2017?

Probably because Bucks FO would then have to use that open cap space to pay for other players on top of paying out Sanders

nothing stopping those GMs from applying, especially if La gets it approved, they woudlve done most of these other Gms alot of the leg work and lack of creativity
