A Potential Turner Moving Partner: Minnesota

Post#1 » by HurricaneDij25 » Fri Oct 16, 2020 4:30 am

While I don't want to move Turner unless the right deal comes along, but I got a guy on the other message board I'm on who says that Turner is the guy he covets the most for his team this offseason, in order to take the defensive burden off Towns.

Obviously Vic's status for 2021 free agency is very much up in the air, but my idea would be Jarrett Culver (a potential 'Dipo replacement), James Johnson (an expiring contract) and a future 2nd round pick.

I my opinion, unless we could land Jrue Holiday in such a deal, to me Culver is precisely the type of lottery pick prospect that would look good in a trade for Myles. Plus, it would free up considerable cap flexibility for 2021.

While I wouldn't instantly pull the trigger without knowing other options are off the table, I'm spit-balling here seeking opinions as the Wolves as a possible trade partner.

How can you match salary on a deal sending Vic and Turner to Minn, Johnson and Culver don't get it done.

My issue with Culver is that he’s a SG that is a historically bad shooter. He put up 40/30/46 shooting splits on a pretty decent volume, and he wasn’t a good shooter, exactly, in college either. I’m not sure I would be ecstatic about a Turner for Culver/17 trade either, based on the idea that Culver is a complete rebuild shooting wise and may end up just being a bench guard for defensive purposes long term.

Revisit this by the mid season deadline

I have a feeling this won't age well

I think this works with Turner or Oladipo not both. I wouldn't throw rocks at my computer if we shipped Vic to MN in a deal like this.

For those that didn't understand the post, the deal was for Turner and NOT Oladipo...

Now that Bjorkren is the guy and not Finch, a Turner/Jrue Holiday swap may be off the table. I say talk to Minnesota right now about Jarrett Culver. It would certainly be a better alternative to flushing more salary down the toilet to re-sign Justin Holiday.

Wait....why would that be flushing more salary down the toilet? Guy played REALLY well last year. Like, insanely well. In fact, he outplayed Jarrett Culver pretty handily this year.

Culver is interesting. But he's a SG that's a terrible shooter. If we could get him for a non Sabonis/Oladipo/Warren/Turner piece, I'd take him. But, Minnesota isn't going to sell him for McDermott and a future 1st right now, even if that's what his play showed this year. I'd take the 1 over him, by far. I'd have to consider 17 over him, and I'd probably stick with Aaron Holiday over him right now, too. But he might end up being a Kris Dunn type player; all defense with a tad of something else to make him not unplayable.

Well, if someone's going to be sitting on the bench getting minimal playing time, I do feel better about stashing Jarrett Culver on the bench, as opposed to Justin, so there's that

I'd like to buy low on Culver as well, but as mentioned the Wolves aren't likely going to be trading him for our bench pieces

If they're willing to take some combination of Doug/TJM/Lamb (when he's back) for Culver, I'm all for it, but it's just unlikely

I read somewhere that Bjorkgren wanted to make Turner and Sabonis work similarly as the Raptors made Ibaka and Gasol work. Don't think it'll work out, but i think trading Turner at this point seems unlikely.

Is it possible that KP floated the idea of trading Turner and every offer he got was far less then he imagined and then began to search for a coach who believed he could make both Sabonis and Turner work?

As much as I like what Justin Holiday gave us this past year, he's kind of old and doesn't really fit the direction of the team, and especially considering we're up against it in terms of guaranteed contracts.

It is incredibly unfair to judge a 20-year-old rookie for his poor shooting percentages. He shot 34 percent from three and 68 percent from the line in college. Not outworldly numbers by any stretch, but they're at least viable. It's worth noting that Oladipo was also a mediocre shooter when he first entered the league.

The guy we just hired specializes in player development and would do wonders with Culver. Not to mention James Johnson is a more than adequate stopgap on an expiring contract in the frontcourt. If many are so concerned that Oladipo may walk, this is a good move to make. Culver would be a good understudy for one year and viable replacement in the long-term. Justin Holiday is not.

He shot a salvageable 34% from 3 in college, from a shorter 3 point line. His FT percentage also doesn’t project that he has good enough form that his overall shooting projects well either. Oladipo’s terrible rookie season shooting was 43/33/78 splits which are still worlds better than Culver shot, and projected much better with time due to the solid free throw shooting. He shot 54/34/72 in college.

I’m all for adding long term assets, but in this case, we’re giving up Turner for a long term project that probably will be a defensive specialist off the bench with no offense for a couple years, and getting a slightly better Jakarr Sampson for a year to fill the PF spot. Holiday isn’t super young, but he’s in his prime and likely to be better for a couple years than Culver.

But the biggest problem with acquiring a Culver is that Minnesota will still value him as the top 10 pick he was than the flawed player that he is so far. I just don’t want to pay full price for a long term rehab.

Minny totally wins this deal. I think you have Culver too high. I just don't see his ceiling being worth this type of risk.

Interesting write up on Justin Holiday with Caitlin Cooper and Tony East.

Given Minnesota’s newfound surplus of guards, I hereby raise my price tag to Culver, Johnson, and a future first round pick.

Johnson got traded to Okc last night in the Rubio deal. They don’t have salary matching contracts right now, really.
