The reason it is unlikely is two fold:
1) I don't think we've ever traded up into the lottery in our history (from memory).
2) Rookie scale contracts
Rookie scale contracts can be a huge boon if you find a gem in the late lottery, late first or second round. But they can equally be a real problem if you dud on a high lotto pick (think guys like Okafor, Josh Jackson, Anthony Bennett etc).
This is likely why you see a lot of teams thinking about moving back or out - in a draft with no clear stars, similar talent level and a lot of uncertainty, teams don't want to guarantee $5-6-7m over multiple years to guys they're not that high on and see better value late.
E.g. the difference in salary between our pick #20 ($2,267,400 1st year, $2,380,800 2nd year and $2,493,900 3rd year) vs say moving up to pick #6 with ATL ($5,104,900 1st year, $5,360,100 2nd year, $5,615,400 3rd year).
That's a difference of like $3m on a cap hit for potentially very similar level players. Every dollar will count for us in 2021 FA.
Having said that, if the FO and Scouting Team was really confident in a certain prospect and felt like it was worth it, by all means. They've earned the right.
Good points, I know it’s unrealistic but I think that there’s a lot of players who can be a steal in this draft since they didn’t get a chance to be properly evaluated due to the shortened season. Hopefully we’ll be able to find a solid contributor at #20
