Babcock HoopsVideo Breakdown: Malachi Flynn
Position: PG | Height: 6’1” | Weight: 185 | Team: San Diego State | Class: Junior
Strengths
- Pick-and-Roll Creation
- Passing + Vision
- Feel for the Game
- Shooting Versatility
- Free Throw Shooting
- Ball Handling
- Engaged + Willing Defender
- Footwork
Concerns
- Average Athleticism
- Positional Size
- Length
- Defensive Switchability
Offensive Synopsis
The most prominent part of Flynn’s offense is his ability to run the pick-and-roll. He ranked in the 96th percentile as a pick-and-roll handler as a junior, in which he demonstrated reliability as both a scorer and a passer. Although he’s only 6’1, he does a really nice job attacking the lane and finishing. He attempted only 21% of his field-goal attempts at the rim, but converted 68.2% of them, which ranks 3rd among other guards in the 2020 class. He doesn’t have elite explosiveness, but Flynn is really crafty in the way he creates advantages. His burst and agility help him to split defenders and beat his man off the dribble, while his footwork and patience make manipulating drop defenders easy. I love watching him snake his way through the lane, often hitting shots that leave you in awe. He likely won’t pressure the rim with high volume at the next level, but the tools and ability to finish with either hand make it an option when necessary.Defensive SynopsisSpoiler:
...he’s one of the more underrated point-of-attack defenders in the class. He’s not overpowering physically, but the technique is there, and his willingness to fight through screens and compete is evident. Even when he’s beaten, Flynn never quits on a play, always providing effort until the whistle by recovering and contesting every shot he can. With good feet and quick hands, he was able to log 56 steals this season, never letting his opponents have anything easy. He’s a formidable perimeter defender, but when his man can get downhill, that causes some problems. The lack of positional size hurts him in the way he gets bumped off spot, so it will be imperative for him to employ his lateral quickness and maintain staying in front of his man.Spoiler:
Outlook
The organization that brings Flynn in is getting a grinder with a relentless work ethic, as well as a guy with swagger and skill on the court. His shooting versatility and ability to play both on and off-ball make him a viable option for a team in need of a punch. Malachi brings a maturity that would coalesce well with any locker room and allow him to contribute in whatever way asked of him. If a team needs a reliable backup point guard with starter upside for the near future, Malachi Flynn could be their guy.

Full body control. Knows how to use his body to gain space. Steps up to moments. perfect for Miami. I hope miami does not pick him.

I see a lot of Victor Oladipo in Josh Green. I really think he's underrated now. The space in the NBA is going to help his game so much. He's going to be cutting into so many open lanes and hitting corner threes. I also think he's going to be a great fast-break type of player.

This draft is so hit and miss. I think just about every players fate is dependent upon what team drafts them even more so than normal. So hard to rank some of these guys because if they get drafted by the wrong team that ranking will look crazy.

Green is athletic, but Dipo was pretty much in that 'special' tier of athlete. Super twitchy. And a much better passer / facilitator.
I think Josh Green can become Danny Green with a pump fake / drive game, and thats a hell of a role player.

Green is an underrated passer imo but there are certainly other limitations to his game where nothing stands out as an elite skill

What are people's thoughts on Ramsey?, I just started looking into him. Size and length is solid, shooting stroke is really nice, very athletic. He looks like a guy whom is going to get under drafted based off of the current hype around him. He looks like a guy whom can score 20ppg in the league

talking out of his highlights on youtube, he could be very well the steal of the draft, in my opinion. I like him a lot.

Re: 2020 NBA Draft II
Just dropped my Patrick Williams scouting video. Man this kid has some tools. Plays at his own pace, doesn’t often get sped up. Shot is a WIP and won’t shoot as much from the mid range in the NBA. But you can totally picture this kid playing minutes in a playoff series with how switchable he is defensively.

I agree with most of this. I just don't see the same thing everyone sees with Bane. He's a good shooter with good fakes, hes a solid passer and rebounder. But his lack of speed and wingspan is a big deal at the next level any way you cut it. Dont get me wrong, he'll be a fine roleplayer, but you cannot expect something more than that. He's not going to have the same opportunities he had in college. This isnt a special case too, guys like this enter the league all the time and I've never see a guy like him become super successful. Late first, early second makes sense to me for this kind of roleplayer. Guys like Isaiah Joe and Sam Merrill project to be better players IMO.

I think LaMelo is free falling right now. Apparently not having good interviews and only interviewing with top 4 teams. Shades of Emmanuel Mudiay's draft fall.

That makes sense as there hasnt been a PG projected in the lotto with as bad a jumper as Melo since Muiday.
At least Muiday is a plus athlete.
