Schlenk's general plan: One fan's pre-off-season guess

Post#1 » by _s_t_u_r_t_ » Fri Oct 30, 2020 2:59 pm

1) Having contemplated everyone's best offer, and nothing meriting serious consideration, pick #6

(Still a fan of Haliburton, but it truly would be nuts that two years in a row Schlenk selects a player I'd anointed my pet cat.)

2a) 12:01 am or whenever FA market opens, make my best offer for Ingram
2b) Having seen him choose NYK instead, and then NOP having matched it anyhow... at 12:02 am or as soon as plausible, begin negotiations with the agent for Christian Wood--who, aside from FVV, is the only conventionally-available free agent who would seem to have high-tier potential. Ostensibly, sign him for as much as $85m/4yrs.

(Just a reminder, practically every team has 8 players who get ~30 min per game... it is a misnomer to presume that starters get all this floor time that others do not... and by the way, let's not forget that foot injuries (re: Capela) sometimes have a way of nagging over time, and that the penalty for a slip-up similar to his (re: Collins) slip-up last season would significantly damage any playoff hopes this team has for 2020-21.)

3) Fill the rest of the roster with 1 year contracts that can be moved at the trade deadline for a booster-rocket player for post-season... and, with that, maintaining the necessary cap space to be a 2021 free agent market player.

Who would you be targeting at pick 6?
Do you think there's any chance NOP fails to match an offer on Ingram?
Why Wood? I don't see the point of signing a center unless Capella is on the block.

I guess I am so different than 99.99999% of other hawks fans. I would not want to sign Brandon Ingram. I just don’t want to be the team that Max’s out a player that had one breakout season to have that player get paid and never lives up to that max contract. If we over a player a max contract I want it to be for a player who has had multiple years where he put up all star numbers. And Christian Wood? I would rather draft one of the bigs at 6 on a rookie contract than pay Wood 20+M a year.
Ok now that is out the way this is what I would do.

1st option get the highest level #2 option I can get by either trade or free agent signing. This is the order I would attempt 1. Lavine (offer 2020 1st, Huerter) 2. Rozan, if he ops in offer Huerter and two 2nd round picks if he ops out offer him 1 year 30M , 2 year 52M , or 3 year 60M. 3. Sign Fournier 3 year 58.5M. After I get one of the three I would sign two defensive roll players (one back court and one wing) examples are Crowder, Nunn, Dellavedova or KCP.

Keep Huerter. He's not for sale or trade. Hawks have six players who should not be available unless someone offers something crazy good for them. You know that this will not happen.

Capela, Collins, Hunter, Huerter, Reddish and Young. That's six and my seventh is Labissiere.

If you have ever been on a car lot and espied a car you wanted, you know what happens. They don't tell you this, but when all is said and done - - "You give us your used car and we sell you our used car."

This same thing works with NBA players. The first offer - - "We will take your player for free and sell you ours." Then, the talks start and you go from there.

I want Tyrese Haliburton at #6. That would make us eight. Don't forget #9, Fernando! We find a couple of free agents and keep some of the remainder of players on our current roster and we're in business!!

This is the old plane Schlenk and the owners had. And it’s a good plan while you are still searching for your superstar. The Hawks found him (Trae Young) about 1 year and a half sooner than expected. So they have scrapped that plan and are at phase two of the rebuild. Which is get more NBA win now talent.

Gray, what are you going to do with all that cap space that goes away after next off-season, though? Just going to add some shiny hub caps and other decor? Nothing you want to do to raise the performance of what's under the hood significantly while you can?

They haven't scrapped the planned, they have accelerated the timeline which they already started towards the end this past season by trading #17 for Capela who has yet to play and bringing back Dedmon and Teague (will he be back?) or upgraded?

Adding that one or two free agents takes some of our $$$ payroll. Then, with money left, we begin the season and see what happens.

Chances seem to be pretty good that, before the deadline, someone will wish to dump players. It may be possible that the Hawks can find a keeper or two here. We did last season when we grabbed Skal and Capela. I expect contributions from both of them this upcoming season.

Don't put all your eggs in one basket. Raised on a farm, I understand this. Don't spend all your cap space just because you have it.
You never know when a real deal will come along and you want to be able to jump.

If the Hawks do nothing else but draft a player, they will be a much better team with a deeper bench. I can smell a playoff spot, with what we have right now, if they stay healthy. Anything else is just bonus wins !!

GO ATL HAWKS !!

I'd agree that there are likely going to be some deals made at the trade deadline that would be appealing to be part of. But as long as Schlenk doesn't sign anyone to more than a $20m total beyond 20-21, I think we're good.

Two weeks later, and this still mainly holds from where I sit, with one major caveat.

If Hayward opts out, then that's a more attractive pursuit than taking aim at Ingram. Hayward is older and of course has been more prone to injury since he's been in Boston, but he's a much better fit because he truly is a point forward, and there really isn't a glaring weakness to his game when he's healthy... which means, all those concerns about the offense when Trae is off the floor are answered.

What will he cost? That's the brutal question, because depending on what happens there, Schlenk may or may not be able to pursue Wood (assuming Wood goes for the $15m+/yr that I feel confident he will).
