People don't understand that communism and socialism are both economic policies, not political policies. Also that for decades now, China has been transitioning to a blend of communist/capitalistic economy, which is what's fueled their boom
The opposite of democracy is not communism or socialism, it is authoritarianism. China is an authoritarian state, and so is Russia, but that isn't because they're communist (neither are socialist, which is a whole other can of worms that if you don't understand the above, it's certainly not worth my time to get into), as Germany in the 40s was authoritarian as well as capitalistic
Republicans love to conflate democracy with capitalism, but they're not intertwined, and neither are communism/socialism and authoritarianism. Democratic socialism is a thing, and countries like Denmark and Sweden practice Social Democracy (which is democracy with a capitalist economy but strong social safety nets), and that's what the more progressive Americans are pushing for
But that's too complex for some people, who can only see the world as "good" and "bad". Democracy good, socialism bad, therefore the two are opposites and the talking head on tv says these people want socialism so therefore they're bad.
