I think the problem is that Trump has proven that the base (30% of the country) LIKES the insane part. Guys like Crenshaw, Cotton, Rubio, Cruz, DeSantis and Hawley may end up cannibalizing each other if they all enter the race. You have a group of Rockefeller Republicans in the northeast (Hogan, Scott, Baker) who could really compete nationally, but would have a tough time getting through a primary. That doesn't even include a QAnon or media-type (Trump Jr or Tucker Carlson). You also have Pence and Nicki Hayley who aren't going anywhere.
Trump only got roughly 30% of voting age citizens to vote for him, and I'd guess at least half of them don't like him a bit. The only Trump voters I know dislike him FWIW.
