It's impossible to overstate what a terrible hire this is.

That team became way less fun to watch now. A shame..

Any team in baseball could've claimed Brad Hand for 10 million next year and nobody did. It's gonna be a depressing offseason.

Yeah it's going to be a nuclear winter. When both sides were fighting about money leading up to the season I always assumed any 'win' by the players was just going to get clawed back by the owners this winter.

The next CBA is going to be a very interesting negotiation. A revenue split model might be the way to go.

didn't make it to the majors until he was 30, and played parts of 11 seasons. Never more than 68 games in a season. Less than 1,000 PA in his career. 31 HRs. Cumulative ML salary over $4M; presumably negligible signing bonus (he was 29th round pick).
Compared to a typical aspiring baseball player, he was a success. It must have been hard sticking it out before he made the majors.

Well winning the Cy Young probably won't help this at all.

Reds dealt Iglesias basically as a cash dump, Noe Ramirez who was returned is basically a replacement-level guy. If we're going to be competing in a cheap payroll season, at least the other divisional teams might be joining in. I'll take it.

While everyone is hunkered down and trying to pinch pennies and cut payroll the Padres are out here swinging for the fences.

From a, "I understand this is how baseball is" standpoint knowing that teams will go through ebbs and flows to avoid several years of luxury tax, you knew the Cubs were going to break things up a bit. The team was fading and Rizzo/Bryant are 30+ (Rizzo) and 29 (Bryant) needing mega-contracts. Heyward is getting older, Darvish older, Lester finally gone...so their options would be to extend or keep those guys and drive the team into the ground as they age over the next 5 years...

...but man, salary dumping Darvish is not a great look.

I was kinda hoping for a soft rebuild for the Brewers but the Cubs just opened the door further. I guess winning the division and taking your chances (probably losing to the Padres, Braves, or Dodgers in the playoffs, yes) might be in the cards.

Because the Cubs did shoot for the moon on the prospects and might tank a little bit here. In 3-4 years they may have a loaded farm system and spend $500 million in an offseason.

Being able to make fun of the Cubs as a poverty team is very enjoyable.

No surprise Epstein quit. He's nothing without a big payroll

It's pretty stunning how bad that package for Cleveland is.

Yeah - even if you take the negative viewpoint for what they had that these guys are in their final year of their deals and are both a bit expensive...I'm not sure I'm excited about anyone in that return package.
