Very puzzling to me, Unless the kid magically lost 30 pounds and as a result moves way quicker, and suddenly became a consistent outside shooter - we have no no business selecting him.

A slow heavy non shooting post up 6"10 guy, as talented as may be, is THE LAST THING this team needs next to Bam.

His father was quoted as saying he lost 23lbs. since the season was cancelled down from 260. It doesn't mean much if his lateral movement isn't quick. We are back to Hassan Whiteside defending the perimeter. The kid can score in the paint which was a weakness for us during the finals when we couldn't get to the paint. I would say he needs to improve his scoring range out and his passing out of the paint if he is going to play there. Defensively is where he's shown physical limitations. How much can he improved his lateral movement and foot work? That to me is the key to his future.

He's just 19 YO so he's still growing, I have a hard time believing he lost 23 pounds considering he an active athlete to begin with, I'll need more then his dad's word for that.

Zion, as talented as he is - is the prime example of how challenging it is for some guys to keep their body light enough for basketball.

If he really did lose a ton of weight AND added an outside shot - he's practically a different player then we saw. Doesn't seem likely but I guess that's why we worked him out.
I with Rex, I do not think Carey is a first rounder. I think Carey is a project and not a great physical prospect to be a project. I think he could become a good NBA player but not worth a first and have to wait multiple years to be a role player.

I've been hearing his name come up lately, Heat media guys reporting he worked out for us too,

Not sure what's the thinking behind this.

We trying to bring back the 90's post up C? Am I missing something in his game?

Very strange to me.

seems like Jr is a pretty decent shooter if you look at his HS workouts.

I wonder if we’re really gonna pick a big man. We’ve seen that Spo really wants to stick with one big come playoff time and slide a small ball 4 in there who can shoot next to him.

So realistically if we draft a big he’s probably only going to get 15mpg behind Bam with the occasion minutes shared with him during the regular season.

Now maybe that’s fine value for a player at 20. Our lack of big men did hurt us when Bam got injured and with Kelly and Meyers on the way out maybe they want to try and add another big body. We shall see
Don’t let us get one. — Nikola Jovic

Dru Smith very lucky he got that 500k this year. He should invest and manage a subway after all this-MettaWorldPanda

The absence of March Madness and the limit on workouts is very favorable for us. Our chances of getting a steal have increased.

Vernon Carey Jr is down to 237 pounds. He had a UD like body transformation even before setting foot in the NBA. Very intriguing player.

The elder Carey said Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski has told NBA teams that the way he needed to use Vernon Jr. did not put on display his full NBA skill set.

“He played under the rim a lot at Duke,” Carey said of his son. “Duke wanted him big [weight-wise] because college basketball is a lot of banging down low. Coach K wanted to use him that way.”

NBA teams wanted him to lose weight, and Carey said his son has done that, dropping from 260 to 237 since the season ended.

Carey Jr. is working out four times a week with renowned trainer Stan Remy, who has assisted Dwyane Wade, Jimmy Butler and many other NBA players.

“He’s continuing to work on his shooting; he wants to be really good at it,” Carey said of his son. “People don’t understand how good he can shoot. He can hit threes consistently. He came right out and hit two threes vs. Kansas in his first game and he’s a guy who can’t shoot? Coach K said, ‘We know you can shoot but we need you inside.’”

Carey said his son is also “working on lateral movement, the things people questioned.”

The Miami Heat, which has the 20th overall pick, interviewed Carey last week and then put him through an hour-long private workout the following day at a Miami gym. Carey said the Heat had his son go through several drills and he “shot well, ran well and passed well.”

Some may be pessimistic about his potential, but is he potentially better than any other big we have besides Bam? Most likely.

There's a lot to like from my perspective.

I posted earlier in the trend about a week ago. Per Barry

I think I may have hyperlinked it or quoted the article.

Could D.Robinson and maybe someone else in a trade fetch us a a first round pick 12 to 14 if so then we could replace Robinson with Aaron Nesmith or Saddiq Bey I feel they could be draft steals!

I feel like the more likely scenario would be 20+ Nunn if we were looking to move up to the late lotto.

Interesting that Nesmith was willing to work out for us though.

I really didn't see the fit, but the kid really changed his body. It makes a lot more sense now that we spent time on him.

Hard to tell how much quicker he got, but losing that much weight can change your movement. If the stories about the shooting are real...getting a big talented versatile kid next to Bam could be very useful.

Carey obviously has a lot of talent, he did have a monstrous freshman season. getting shredded in the covid break shows me he has some toughness in him.

I guess it depends on how much we liked what he showed when we practiced him.
