If the Knicks bring in this all-star FO only to trade for Westbrook and/or trade Mitch and Frank to trade up for LaMelo then it proves the franchise is cursed. It's like buying a million dollar supercar and on the first ever drive pulling out of your garage and crashing it into the tree in your front yard.
If you'd rather see your team fail so you can be right

I agree with all this. FVV coming in to shoot 20 times a game and winning just enough games to not get a good pick isn't my priority and RJ hasn't demonstrated that he can be a 1st option yet
This is the only way to come at FVV, is to say he'll be our first option, when we all know RJ is going to get the lion's share of the shots whether he's ready or not. They already tipped their hand to this by looking for players in the draft that fit with RJ.
Who exactly is our first option this season if it's not RJ?
I can't really answer that right now because we have no idea what the roster will look like. If we don't make a big trade or FA signing and keep a very young team it probably will be RJ and I'm ok with that. I just want RJ, whichever rookies we sign, and some of the younger players from prior drafts, to get as many touches as possible.
Fact is FVV isn't going to sign a max deal just to come in here and walk the ball up the court to give to RJ who statistically was in the cellar last year

The only way RJ isn't our first option is if we trade for Russ, whether he's a true first option in the long term isn't going to change the fact he's going to get the most shots on our team this season, and signing Fred isn't changing that. Hayes doesn't need to be ready to be one right now, but having Fred would take ball handling pressure off him and RJ, while giving RJ spacing.
FVV is a good move towards establishing a middle ground between rebuilding and competing since he's young enough to grow with the team, and has proven himself good enough to be a major contributor to a playoff team. With how many guys we have on rookie deals his salary doesn't even hurt us either.
If we know RJ isn’t a first option player then why put him in that role to fail?
Fred is def gonna take shots from him. He was recently saying he wants to be the lead guard on a team or something like that. He ain’t coming here to be a 2nd/3rd option.
We don't know whether or not RJ is a first option in the long term, but the question for next season is, if it's not RJ who is it? Forget FVV for one second, who is our first option going into next season?
Fred is going to go where he gets money and where he can have a expanded role, we're building right now with RJ in mind. If he picks the Pistons then I'll agree it was solely about the shots.

Killian Hayes (Knicks might be trying to make past draft correction with this pick)![]()
Tyrese Haliburton
Kira Lewis
Devin Vassell

I don't know, I have to watch the tapes.
Putting on my Knicks-colored glasses for WORST case scenarios here:
Hayes - Drafted a lot earlier than people think he will be, not there when Knicks pick
Haliburton - Goes right before Knicks pick to the Pistons
Kira - Knicks pass on him because he is considered a "reach" at 8 by the barstool sports mock drafts of the world and this is the EXACT type of player that goes to the Celtics and thrives for years and years under Ainge.
Vassell - Knicks select him or Okoro. Vassell/Okoro goes on to play decent-to-good defense but ultimately proves to be yet another role player as we fail to score 80 points a game. Meanwhile Knicks fans cry to the heavens a la the Hilary Clinton "Nooooo" voter meme that they can't seem to get "lucky" enough to draft a scorer...while somehow completely ignoring that they could have gotten their pick of Kira, Nesmith, Precious, Hampton, and (Jesus) even Toppin, Malachi Flynn and Cole Anthony who all proceed to have success scoring for their other, more well-run teams.
Oh man, this is happening, isn't it?

Last summer of RJ"s rookie deal is 2023!!
yeah his rookie deal ends at the end of the 22-23 season, we have pay him that summer. Its best to load up on talent summer 2022 while RJ is only scheduled to make about 9-10 million in 22-23 and then go over the cap to sign RJ summer of 2023. of course this is all assuming RJ can become a star(I believe in him)

There is no player on the FA or trade market other than Russ that would take shots from RJ, he's really the only guy that would look at a coaches gameplan, laugh and get away with it.
Ok, so what if FVV isn't coming here to be a first option, then what? This fear of him being a first option is odd to me too, cause he was just the leading scorer in the playoffs for the Raptors. And that's really because Siakam wet the bed so badly.
For better or worse, RJ is going to be our focal point on offense this season, no matter who we sign or trade for that is actually available.

I like Randle a lot. He would be a great 3rd option with a capable playmaker running the show. Someone who can take over a game and downright unstoppable at times when needed.

I'd be more ok with Randle if it wasn't for the fact that between RJ and Mitch being viewed as our young core he is a very poor fit with them. He's not nearly as bad as people make him out to be but he is a terrible fit. We need a stretch 4, desperately

most teams need a stretch 4 because there a very few stretch 5's. So he is a bad fit at least as a starter for like 95% of teams.
He also doesn't play defense. So he its not a surprise he never has played on winning teams.

How many 1st options realistically are in this league, period? We brought in Leon Rose to build this damn team and then sit in front of those guys and get them here. Maybe we get them through the draft but if we have a good foundation, we have a good culture, Dolan doesn't say anything stupid, and we have the city, we will have a shot in FA.

Again it’s between Devin Vessell and Kira Lewis. If neither NYK will trade out of this #8 pick.
In short, all I am saying is RJ-Brunson-Grimes-Quickley-Randle are the untouchables moving forward.

That whole first option thing is limiting. Miami doest have a true first option. You have a bunch of very good players that fit well together and they go to the hottest player on any given day. I say we go that route - build a TEAM and stop with the incessant star phucking so early in the process.
