You need 2-way wings, 2-way shooting bigs, and you can't allow low iq players on the court. Assist/turnover ratio is crucial. Shooting point guards are icing on the cake IF they are plus defenders.

On it's own, no. However, when you add it to other assets, its valuable. More than holding onto Bruce Brown another few months just to prolong the inevitable.

Musa has potential. Brown, is Brown and won't ever be more.

Props to Turbo_Zone for the sig.

Yeah, I just don't see a likely 50's pick in a future draft to hold much sweetener value.
Also, Brown obviously made a lot of improvements to his game in year 2. Nothing is to say he isn't capable of doing so again in year 3. So Weaver might have sold himself short on Brown.
Again, there was nothing to hurt my keeping Brown around to see if he continued to improve.

Re: [WOJ]Pistons trade Bruce Brown to Nets...
You don't aggregate losing deals to create a winning deal.
Smart teams would make someone pay for a winning, in-house developed, humble, low-cost role player like Bruce Brown.
If you're donating wins to another team how do you suddenly gain enough self-respect to do a winning deal with the next team?
I digress... whatever.
I'm hoping there's some secret information out there Weaver has that we don't know.

Also I could see Detroit trading this SRP to get a late second in this years draft from a team like Philly who has four SRP's this year. Philly has 34, 36, 49, 58 this year. I could see Detroit sending this Toronto 2021 SRP to Philly for #49 this year (or even #58)
I'm hoping this trade is reminiscent of that one and musa gets to showcase his playmaking skills and improves his offense but man his field goal/3pt percentage is bad.

meh - kinda surprised we got a second for Brown. I get that he played hard and all, but the days of defensive specialists who can't shoot are pretty far behind us. Anyway, I think he was looking at a minutes crunch. We've got svi and luke to develop at the 2 already. I don't think the new team vision has either of them as playing big minutes at 3.
Musa? He's probably going to wash out. I wouldn't put too much stock into his NBA stats though. He hasn't seen much more than garbage time outside of a couple games. He's got size and was shooting 36% from 3 in his euro play.
Glad we got a 21 pick instead of this year. Much better draft class and fits out timeline better.

I must have slept through all the winning.
Bruce Brown was a bench player who started on a very bad team out of necessity. That should tell you how devoid of talent the Pistons are. Troy Weaver was brought in to clean house, tear the roster down and rebuild. He's doing that. Trading a role player for a draft pick is exactly what he SHOULD be doing.
People are acting up on social media like the Pistons just traded Billups again. They traded Will Bynum. And it won't be the last trade. Hold onto your britches, this is going be fun.

Re: [WOJ]Pistons trade Bruce Brown to Nets...
whats up pistons fans, musa is from bosnia & herzegovina just like i am, so im gonna give you some info about musas game
musa is a natural scorer and while he was never known as a great shooter, he can shoot (.365 for three on 6 attempts per game in his g league career, total 48 games, but his three point shot didnt translate in the nba for whatever reason, but my guess would be "pressure", which he shouldnt have in detroit)
musa loves driving to the basket, although hes having trouble finishing at the rim (except when hes running the break, then he doesnt seem to have problem finishing over someone) due to his athleticism and weak body which actually improved a lot since he was drafted, cause he was really skinny back then... hes right handed, but he does everything with his left hand, except shooting and he always goes left, which obviously is a problem, he needs to learn to drive on the right side too... floater is his specialty, although he didnt use it as much as i expected, but thats a good shoot for him
musa likes to pass the ball and he can really pass and is also a good ball handler for someone his size (6' 9"), he plays shooting guard and small forward positions
he was never known for his defense, actually, he was never even solid defender, but it was a shock when musa played better defense than offense in the nba and hes known for his scoring ability... so, he pretty much showed he can defend in the nba and become solid defender, just not to be a liability on that end
from what ive read about dwane casey and his system, it looks like it will be good fit for musa, so im really hoping musa can show he belongs in the nba, cause hes still 21 years old... he shouldnt feel pressure in detroit, its a rebuildning team, so that should help him... its a gamble, but i think musa is worth the gamble, after all, bruce brown isnt a big loss if it doesnt work out
sometimes players just need a change of scenery and theres a great chance musa is one of those players

I liked Brown because he competed on a bad team; but for me the best value he provided for the Pistons was he kept them from loosing as bad as they were going to loose anyways.
Also (and this is more conjecture) try hard, good defense guys tend to be over relied on by coaches when its player development time and can lead to the higher ceiling players not getting development minutes. When its a loss either way Id rather spend it on developing higher ceiling players. Sometimes the GM needs to remove the Coaches security blankets.

welp, i actually liked Bruce Brown and thought if he improved his shot a bit he would be a nice starter going forward. I won't knock the trade until we see this Musa guy in person.

Yeah I'm sure the Nets brought him in to help them lose. Just like KCP helped the Lakers lose this year. Sometimes you need to develop role players and as long as you dont overpay them, they pay off when you are ready to win.
Smart teams with good cultures do this... it's part of the reason Jimmy Butler went to Miami and they leapfrogged the East - good role players like Udonis Haslem get respected but not overpaid on good teams.
But never mind, whatever. Carry on Troy. Just realize Okc had tons of great draft picks, 3 MVPs (and still has a boatload of picks to this day...)

Dang, the writer didn't pull many punches in that piece.
Its especially telling that its a writer that covers the nets. No Langlois type fluff pieces here.

I liked Bruce’s ability to play defense but his offense was atrocious. He was a solid bench player at best in my opinion. Not a keep improving into Jimmy Butler kinda story. We aren’t contending anytime soon. I like the direction this hopefully points out we are taking. Let the Hinkie wholesale begin please. Any shots for the 21 draft through this extra pick and more loses by losing Brown (even if it’s one more loss) are good for me. On another note maybe this opens up rookie playing time at PG even if Rose stays and starts.
Wonder what’s next? Blake or Rose trade, sign and trade or let Wood walk? After seeing what it took for the lakers pick I doubt Kennard brings in much. We should be tanking hardcore for this and the next draft.

I liked the guy and attitude but I don't see what the fuss is about. Weaver is likely in the process of sweeping out the old regime so this is the beginning of that process. I expect Kennard to be next and to be honest, that would hurt because I think he's as underrated around here as Brown has been overrated.
Pistons fans have a habit of falling in love with decent players and hyping them up into players they are not (Bullock, Bynum, Brown).
RJ & Drummond are the most glaring examples. Just saying.

Really disappointing trade. Not world-ending, but really feels like you should have been able to squeeze a mid-second round pick atleast. Late 50s picks are basically useless.

Well, Weaver has spoken and he is (Please Use More Appropriate Word).
I, for one, do not welcome our new moron overlord.
Bruce Brown was at the VERY LEAST under contract for another year, could play PG-SG-SF backup role.
I keep saying it, but if I was able to use my toilet break time I could end up as a better GM than a lot of people. So what is going on with management picking these guys?

LOL. This trade says a lot more about whiny piston fans than it does about Weaver. Weaver was brought here because he was considered to be an astute evaluator of talent. He's made two moves that is costing us virtually nothing. Both Patton and Musa have skills. Now it's up to Casey to develop those skills. And if they can't be developed here oh well. The idea is to win a championship not be mediocre. We are a team full of Bruce Brown which doesn't translate into a championship. Lighten up and let the man do his job
