The Rockets needed to liquidate Covington so they can attach both draft picks to Westbrook's contract. I believe they're still short one pick. I stand by my assessment it will cost 3 mid-late firsts to move Westbrook. Either that or one lottery pick. As it stands we may see the Knicks or Hornets (gulp) move on Westbrook for the 2 picks alone. So maybe I'm off by one late first in favor of Houston's trade partner for WB.

And, -- fully ignoring that Charlotte would need to use picks to dump their bad contracts a fact you never account for -- why would Houston do that, versus just keeping 3 picks and Westbrook? The Harden era looks over, keep the rebuilding assets and the salary cap hit of Westbrook, as it will be a long time before Houston is an attractive FA location again.

That's a pretty steep price for a 3-D guy. No one thinks he's putting Portland into serious contention.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

Why are so many people surprised at how much value Covington brought back when this is pretty identical to what he got traded for nine months ago?

I really dont get it. The only relevant adjustment to his value would be his playoff performance and he was excellent:

11ppg / 5rpg / 1.3apg / 2.5 spg / 1.1bpg / .68 TS% / .169 WS48 / 1.3 OBPM / 3.8 DBPM

His raw numbers are meh but he was taking WAY few shots given how well he was splashing. And that DBPM over 12 games is nuts.

GM's know they don't want to play together. Erase WB and the price of Harden goes up. No rush to deal Harden. Rozier might go good with Harden. I maintain Rozier has positive value and so do expirings for WB. Rockets could just hold out one year with Harden and add a max player with money from Batum's expiring.

So, Houston should deal Westbrook and pay 3 picks because a much crappier Rozier is worth a 1st? Got it.

Houston would sit on Westy before attaching 3 FRP's to move him. They are going into a rebuild. They will keep their picks. Hell, they already gave a bunch away to OKC.

I was hoping the Blazers could grab McLemore, as well.

Very nice trade for Portland. Basically a redo for Houston.

The more interesting thing to me was hearing POR offered this same package to Orlando for Gordon and was turned down.

I don't have that in a taken as fact category. I have it in a more likely than not spin category.

“Similar” package. May (or may not) be the same.

I wish Portland had a way to get Gordon still but I don’t see them trading McCollum for him and not a ton of picks left to deal at this point
