Re: 2020 NBA Draft Prospects: Thread III
Edwards is explosive. Almost Zion like.
I see the comparisons to Olandipo and Mitchell. Smaller Shooting guards 6-4 who can step back and slam. Edwards probably has more power than both those guys but those guys played hard as heck at Louisville and Indiana. They had a high elite motor and were both two way guys.
I just don’t want to be burned on Edwards like I was on Wiggins. You fall in love with their game because they can do everything on the court and make it look easy but they never played hard and they had low b-ball iq.
If he’s the pick, I’ll be okay with it but I won’t love it until I see he’s gonna play hard and learn with effort.

I’m scared of this from Edwards. He says he’s willing to Quit basketball tomorrow.
His eyelids are heavy, and his mind wanders. He says he stayed home and went to Georgia rather than a powerhouse like Duke or North Carolina in order to be closer to his newborn nephew. But later he says, "I'm ready to get out of Atlanta." (The Hawks hold the sixth pick in Wednesday's draft.) He says he doesn't think about being the first player taken. He'll be ready when the time comes, but "other than that, I don't even care."
"To be honest," he says, "I can't watch basketball."
He retells the story about the first time he dunked and how it signaled to him that he was talented and could accomplish something he might not have been able to in football, which was his first love. So that's the direction he went, simple as that, hanging up his cleats. "That's all I needed to see," he says.
So when after that did he get into basketball?
"I'm still not really into it," he says. "I love basketball, yeah. It's what I do."
He's not entirely convincing. He says if he were drafted by the NFL tomorrow, he'd let basketball go.
"Because you can do anything on the field," he explains. "You can spike the ball. You can dance. You can do all type of disrespectful stuff." In the NBA, he says, "you can't do any of that. You'll get fined."
He goes on to say that he's an aspiring rapper

"And it's what I do. It's a job. I feel like I'm working right now. I love it."

This is the difference. Those two were each defensive players of the year in their conferences I believe. Edwards had the lowest motor of any prospect is ever seen. It was shocking how often the PG would get past half court and then have to wait a few seconds because Edwards was walking down the court. Happened consistently. I’ve never seen it before.
When he’s locked in, he’s a stud on both ends. Just didn’t happen often enough. Is that something he can learn after not being pushed his entire life to play hard?

The 2nd part you added was 2 weeks after the initial interview. It’s pretty clear he was coached on what to say for the follow up.

You forget Oladipo played three years at Indiana. Mitchell two at Louisville. Edwards, on the other hand, reclassified and was at Georgia for one season. The point being he's really young.
Are you saying to never draft a prospect with elite physical tools and skills but questionable motor again? Yes, the Wolves and we, as fans, were burned. But to hold that against a different prospect is wrong, IMO.

I don't believe so. Did you listen to his interview after his ESPN pro day?

He is as explosive they come, though I worry that if we're comparing him to explosive PF's he's more akin to Anthony Bennett than he is Zion Williamson.

You’re probably right.
It’s more likely that he fell in love with the game and became a student of it (suddenly after not watching basketball, 2 weeks later he’s studying Chris Paul...) in the 2 weeks between interviews.

Like someone who joined RealGM in August only to finally submit a post two months later. Guess your heart wasn't into it then but now...

Also, what happens the moment he feels like basketball has now gotten him through the "stuff I need to get through" ? Is that after a single season of game checks? Will he flip out and turn his eye to fooball and retire from basketball to go jump in at the Canadian League or something to get noticed once he feels financially secure? You know, ditch the J.O.B he talked about. Strange interview, talking out of both sides. This is another ultra young kid and we probably shouldn't take anything he's saying seriously.BlacJacMac wrote:Baseline81 wrote:UnFadeable21 wrote:

I’ve lurked for years. Not really big on the endless discussion, but sometimes interesting things pop up. I finally signed up because it’s easier to see what’s new.
I guess this story was the straw that finally made me comment.
But I’ll go back to lurking now. I’ve said my piece.

These kinds of responses might be why someone might be hesitant to start posting. That or how horrible I can post at times.
Maybe it's LeMello Ball himself! Welcome whoever.

Don't get me wrong, Edwards has his warts. But early in this process, Rosas said the draft is where you swing for the fences/homeruns. I don't see one bigger than Ant Man. Guards/wings are where you win in this current NBA, not bigs.
I'll also admit, the article doesn't put him in the best of light. But with this much time between the draft lottery and the actual draft, Rosas and company has had their time to vet Edwards. They've interviewed and watched him workout. If they feel he's committed to basketball, he'll be the pick, IMO.

Unless you are the Lakers. Rosas defined them as two bigs. Is that current enough winning?

I've always looked at James as a SF and Davis a PF. In this era, they can each slide up a spot to PF and C, but that's not their bread and butter positions.

I think the key is perimeter players. Lebron is most definitely a perimeter player. Anthony Davis is a big but probably the best big in the past 10+ years and was a PG until a HS growth spurt. He has some nice perimeter skills as well.

Did Ball drop a hint he's going first overall tomorrow? At 1:55 of the clip, he says Lonzo's no. 2 because he was drafted second. LaMelo's no. 1 cause he was pick one.
