Because we've looked really good when we've deployed effective stretch 5's. The challenge is finding guys who can play that role consistently. Jalen's that guy in this draft.
Doesn't make any sense to me to draft a back-up center over Haliburton when we have Ayton and no long term future at point guard

This means Cam isn’t a permanent starter at the 4 position which gives us depth for the wing position.
Cam is absolutely the starter at the 4 this kid will be his back up
Gives us a backup at both 4 and 5.
I think he takes Cam's spot and makes him a super sub and 6MOTY candidate

Smith was my second choice if we went big behind Toppin. I'm happy with this and trust JJ's talent eval.

Love the Jalen Smith pick, he's a guy who would've most definitely increased his draft stock in the NCAA Tourney so not really a reach IMO.

Re: The 2020 NBA Draft - Poll for your favorite prospect who may be there at 10 - can vote now
Did a little research and I'm alright with the pick. Unlike last year, I wasn't as invested in this year's draft with everything going on so when people say Jalen was a reach, it doesn't bother me as much as the Cam pick from last year. Then again, I was wrong about the Cam pick last year so maybe Smith was the right pick
But right out the gate, he's clearly a player that you can play in different line ups (with or without Ayton) and that's important when bringing in front court depth which we need. I also understand the not taking a PG like Halliburton. In the NBA, if you have high aspirations, you can't really rely on a rookie PG as a CP3 replacement when he goes to the bench. I think you need steady hands and I'm guessing that's what we're looking for with our exceptions

I commented a month ago that I think he is strictly a C and he is really limited as ball handler and creator. Not sure about the fit with Ayton and Saric already on the roster.

I haven't done my research on Jalen smith because he wasn't in our pick range, so I can't make judgment on the pick yet. ... but passing on Vassell and Haliburton kind of irritates me.

What was the deal he turned down?
^this. Everyone assumes we had teams offering everything to trade up. Teams were probably happy where they were and so you take the guy you want at your pick, period.
Yeah, if you want a guy, pick him. Don't mess around, or as others would say, "Get cute". He fits a need, as a backup big...is a great defender and can hit the 3.

What were you wrong about with Cam? Look at the 2 picks after him

No...I mean MAYBE eventually against certain teams, but still doubtful. Definitely covers us for an Ayton or Saric injury though.

Not surprising. He was the first visit on that JJ and Monty trip.
I like him and think he’s a great fit. Energy. Rebounds. Blocks shots. Physical. And decent shooter.
