Or just buy a damn pick for once.
Ha that's a good joke. Like Sarver would ever do that.
Probably an immediate termination for any GM who would even bring that suggestion up to him.

Regardless of my disappointment in the selection I’ll be rooting for Smith hard to prove me wrong.

Well, they lucked out in getting the #2 pick...jumped us..we would have taken Ja. Other than that they've drafted 3 PFs in the last 3 years. I did like JJJ and obviously Clarke though, especially at 21...a lot of other teams passed on Clarke though.
This regimes worst pick is Jerome.
Of course the pick that set us back the most by not taking the alternative many here wanted, was Ayton over Doncic. Jackson over Fox and Isaac were bad too, as was Bender over Murray or Hield...or trading Bogdan, 13 and 28 for Chriss..could have taken LeVert, Dejounte Murray and kept Bogdan instead of trading for Chriss.
It's been a HELL of a lot worse. Kendall Marshall?
You sure seem pissed off for a guy that has watched all this.
I expect us to act competently. Massive incompetence in the past is not an excuse to accept minor incompetence now. The asset management is still bottom 5 in the league if I'm being generous. That should concern the hell out of everybody, and I'm sick of watching casual fans who had no idea who the pick was and/or didn't want him before the draft, suddenly excusing it and all else based on bad logic. There are a ton of guys who could have helped us in this draft. It is deep. We need depth. And we locked in at $8 mil a year a guy who was at best questionable to go where he did, and we have no assets to jump in to get at 30+ a bunch of guys we had valued as acceptable around 10th. But our poor management for the past 2 years has prevented that. And everyone excuses it.
More than that, we can't really be hopeful going forward in a draft under Jones. Luka was the big miss, but can you say in a re-draft there is ANY chance Jones takes Luka? Jones wants heady defenders who can shoot the 3 and pass. Luka coming out could pass. He was a bad defender who couldn't shoot. No way Jones picks him. Shouldn't that type of tunnel vision when it comes to a draft, and the lack of urgency to get assets when available, concern every single fan here?
I think the issue here is Jones inherited a busted team. But hard to argue that the players he's added haven't been good fits. Cam, Oubre, Payne, Saric, Baynes etc. all these guys were plusses for us. You're right, his asset management has been poor (TJ Warren trade, shipping out picks etc.) but he's added good basketball players.
I think he's a little bit in the mode of over correcting McD's strategy which was acquire assets to no real end and suffer bad basketball. Jones is less concerned with assets, but the basketball is much better. For all the credit people give Sam Presti and OKC for their asset management, it's not like they're hanging a bunch of banners in the rafters despite having Durant, Harden, Westbrook, Paul, etc. suit up for them.
All I'm saying is, assets arent the end all be all. Good basketball is more important.

superior asset management skills is meaningless if you keep drafting the likes of Len, Bender, Chriss or Josh Jackson...

I don't like that trade for the Mavs. Curry was very important for them.

If he works out the way he is theorized then yeah its great, i guess im just worried that this archetype has a low rate of success. Im getting Adreian Payne flashbacks lol. You're right as far as rarity though, i just looked through the last 10 drafts and found less than 20 1st rounders that even had a similar profile in size/strengths combination. So maybe its just small sample. Like I said, I'll be pulling for him.
Yeah, after getting Ayton, before thinking about playing a wing at the 4, I looked across the league looking for an Ibaka type...a guy who can block shots and hit 3s. There are not many. Maxi Kleber was one of the only ones.
This guy is a great finisher too. He has a 7'2 wingspan.
Yeah ive always loved Maxi.
For me i think his defensive versatility will be a swing. If he can handle guarding on the perimeter reasonably well then i'll feel better about it.
I probly wouldnt have said anything if Vassell wasnt still on the board. He just seems like a sure thing on being a starting caliber wing. But of course now that ive posted that he will bust lol
I think that's a tough task. Maxi is arguably the best defensive 4 in basketball. I hope Smith ends up that good defensively but I don't quite see that. I think he'll shoot well from 3 and around the hoop, but will be a non-driver and non-mid-range player. I have no idea how he'll defend on the perimeter. He probably has the physical tools to do it but he simply wasn't put in that position at Maryland. My hope is that they worked him out and ran small guys at him and that he showed well.

This × 1000000000000000000! Could you just imagine how good Riller could become with being mentored by Paul for two years.
My hope now is that they're targeting late 2nd to undrafted steals!
like what they did with Jalen Lecque.

Nobody's advocating for bringing McD back. What I'm advocating for is to not accept going from the McD of drafting to the McD of asset management. And frankly outside of maybe NYK I don't know a team that has mishandled trades involving picks and failure to trade down more than us since Jones took over.

A number of us discussed him and liked him at #10 before Okoro and Patrick Williams jumped up in mocks..when we expected Vassell and Haliburton to be the other guys gone along with the other 7 who went.
I would have preferred those guys but not by a huge amount..not like last year. Jalen Smith would have probably been 3rd on my board. I may have had Bane 4th and of course he went 30th.
It doesn't seem like you understand that in these drafts, GMs never know exactly where certain guys will go and that if you like a guy you take him. Like the Bucks taking Giannis or Jokic going where he did. If Jokic (who went #41) went 15 to your team you would have been extremely pissed even though he ended up the best or 2nd best player of the draft.
Sure, someone could have traded down to 40 and gotten him, but someone also could have taken him at 13 or 17 or something.
Typically after the top 5 or 10, it's a crapshoot. It was even a crapshoot tonight after the top 3, and I don't even think at least 2 of the top 3 will be all that much. It wouldn't shock me if Jalen Smith ended up better than Ball or Edwards...Edwards could end up another Fultz or something and Ball is worse than his brother coming in, so there is a good chance it stays that way.
That's another guy...Fultz...I'm sure if he was there at 4 for our pick that year you would have been pissed if we didn't take him...but it wouldn't have turned out so well if we did.

What are you even talking about? The 10 day contract the Suns signed him to was more than 3 years prior to Jones being named GM and do you know who waived him the following year? The Mavs.

This is a tought draft to assess value. Bane going to the Celts with the MIL pick that we traded for Ty Jerome (who by the way i liked a lot at that point) hurts right now.AtheJ415 wrote:SuperSunsFan wrote:superior asset management skills is meaningless if you keep drafting the likes of Len, Bender, Chriss or Josh Jackson...

This has nothing to do with disliking Smith. I personally had Smith as a guy I was okay with us getting out of this draft, just not at 10, and it royally pisses me off and should piss every other fan here off that there are guys who everyone agrees would strongly help us who have slipped 10-20 picks in back to back drafts, but we don't have the means to get them because we continuously miss chances to add extra picks and toss them into unnecessary trades because of sheer incompetence. I mean, you read the Lowe article about the Jackson trade right? There is league-wide recognition that our asset management is hot garbage and teams weren't sure we understood the rules. This was close to Vlade's 1st year with the Kings level.
