Rate our Draft Night Overall
Yeah, we need another Grade This thread like we need a hole in the head, but I figured it would be good to see how people feel overall about the night's moves and picks- it certainly wasn't boring, I'll grant it that.
Here's a recap, with incoming players in bold. Ariza not bolded given indications already are that he'll never play a game for us.
Drafted Number 7- Killian Hayes Selected
Traded Future First rounder (Top 16 protected for 4 years, top 10/9 protected a couple years after that, then second rounders) for Trevor Ariza and Number 16 Pick-Isaiah Stewart Selected
Traded Luke Kennard for the Number 19 Pick- Saddiq Bey Selected and Rodney McGruder
Sold Future Second Round pick to Rockets for 4.6 Million Dollars
Traded "Future Considerations" and Cash for Tony Bradley and Number 38 Pick- Saben Lee Selected

Re: Rate our Draft Night Overall
I posted this in the draft night thread a few minutes before this thread was created, but its more relevant here:
Detroit started the day with only #7.
The ended up with 7,16,19,38
The only future draft capital they sacrificed is a HEAVILY protected future 1st and LAL's 2021 2nd which very well could be #60.
I'd say it was a successful night. Just gotta hope the picks pan out.

None of that means a thing if we didn't make the right picks, though.
I'm tentatively happy with the Hayes and Bey picks. The Stewart one is a bit of a head scratcher for me, and I won't even go through the motions of pretending to know anything about Saben Lee.
I also have no idea what our starting lineup even looks like next year. And I like that- it means good things for tanking.

I hear you, but by that metric trading for any draft picks in any trade doesn't mean anything if said picks don't pan out.
I mentioned several times in the past that Detroit's current best chance to get a star is the get more darts to throw, and that is exactly what they did. They didn't really give up much of the future in order to get those darts either.

We can still have opinions about those picks. Adding 16 matters less to the grade if you don’t like Stewart.

Re: Rate our Draft Night Overall
I liked it.
Voted B.
Basically have to be the 6th seed in the next 4 years to lose our pick. And I certainly don't want to trade any future 1st so I'm perfectly OK not trading any 1st rounders for atleast 4 years.
Saben Lee was head scratching but im gonna lean on Weavers expertise than some mock draft of people who know nothing.
Weaver gets an A for excitement though.

Yeah, I don't love the Stewart pick so that does put a damper on the trade for #16. Still, I don't hate the pick as much as I did the Austin Daye pick for example. I don't feel like Stewart is immediately destined to fail like I did with Daye.
I love everything about the Kennard for 19 trade. Was never all that high on Kennard, and Bey actually seems like a better version of Kennard who is also cheaper.
The trade for 38, like you I know next to nothing about Lee. But I like the overall framework/purpose of the trade.

Also all of these moves negated us from going after overpaid free agents so B+

Re: Rate our Draft Night Overall
Pick at #7 A
Trading a future first for #16 B
Trading Kennard for #19 D
Trading "future considerations" for #38 B
Trading a future 2nd rounder for cash D
Overall a B- or C+ draft unless someone really exceeds expectations. The most important move was #7 but that was almost an auto pick at that point given who was left. If one of the guys we got at #16 or #19 ends up being a long term NBA starter for us than the draft is an A or A- but that is far from a given.

Make no mistake: for better or worse, drafting Hayes was the most important move today.
Yes Kennard fans, that’s right.

By the way folks- expectations for these rookies early in the season should be WAY down.

Re: Rate our Draft Night Overall
I voted B.
I had a feeling there were going to be some moves.
Got less than I thought for Luke. But I didn't want him resigned. No defense. Injury prone. So we get what some say was the best SF in college ball last year. Bey has a forward release. I don't like it. but seems like a smart and strong player.
I like Isaiah stewart, just not quite at the 16 pick. I wonder if we thought nesmith would fall and he didn't. that was who I thought we were targeting at that point.
I know nothing about Lee. Doesn't look like a pg. And small for an off guard. But most second rounders don't stick anyways. I would have chose Isaiah Joe myself at that point.
But overall a B. Had to make some moves to rebuild, or whatever he called it.
I also like that we won't be able to trade future draft capital for a bit.
He said he wanted to attack the draft. And now he want's to attack free agency.
I'd love to grab Bogdan the g/f from the kings that was supposed to be traded to the bucks.
Would LOVE to grab him. Would love to get some draft capital back trading Trevor Ariza.

Re: Rate our Draft Night Overall
I picked C I love the Killian pick, Isaiah Stewart was meh it didn't piss me off but he wasn't who I was expecting. IMO Kennard for 19 was awful almost felt like Weaver got draft drunk falling in love with the shiny new toys so to speak. I dont hate Bey but I dont think he is a high potential guy, so idk why trade a guy like Kennard for another you hope will land in that same tier of player. Pick 38 idk who he was but it doesn't bother me.

Re: Rate our Draft Night Overall
I voted B. Stewart was a total head scratcher in my mind.
I have no issue with the Kennard move- I think it’s fair value and think it’s fine to wipe the slate clean. Kennard was a nice scorer but incomplete player and I think people are underestimating the injury’s impact on his value. Expectations were unrealistic if you thought his value was greater than this.

Re: Rate our Draft Night Overall
i'd give it an A-. the rebuild is on and we acquired two extra picks for little (16 and 38). generally the players we got have a good mix of size, athleticism and skill which is a breath of fresh air because we didn't draft any prospects like henry ellenson that have massive obstacles to overcome to be a rosterable player.
obviously hayes is the most exciting pick but i like bey as well. lee has the kind of skills you hope for in a second round project.
a lot of people don't like centers (especially those that can't shoot from 3) but the reality is that teams need a big man to defend the rim and do dirty work like set screens, crash boards, etc. i'm going to wait until i see him play before i pass judgement.

I probably would have traded Kennard with 7 to secure taking a shot on Hayes so I'm glad it all worked out with him being there.
He pretty much was a consensus favorite amongst Piston fans on multiple site's it seemed like as well.

Re: Rate our Draft Night Overall
The Rockets trade - C+ if we cut Ariza, B if we deal him for something
The Clippers trade - A for direction of the team
The Utah trade - A+++++ - think about it - they gave us a player who may very well start at center, as well as a pick for some of Gores’ money. Awesome.
Oh, and the Nets trade - A - we got a pick for a guy who can’t shoot. Well done.
As for the picks - who knows? But like sack said, we got four picks in top 38 - that’s great. My guesses:
Hayes will be a starter and make eight figures someday.
Stewart will wash out.
Bey will be a starter and make high seven figures someday
The fourth guy will be out of the league in two years.
But that’s fine - You never know with these players - millions of dollars will alter behavior and work ethic - there’s a lot of guesswork.
All in all, I give it an A. Delighted to watch the kiddies grow!

Re: Rate our Draft Night Overall
In terms of our needs, this draft was successful and pretty damn interesting. Only Stewart is a question mark but I'll give Weaver the benefit of the doubt. This should play out for another lottery pick or two in upcoming talent rich drafts, setting us up for the post-Griffin era.
Definitely an A+ for surprises and entertainment!

Re: Rate our Draft Night Overall
Honestly, last year I thought we had one of the worst wing rotations in the league, so it’s weird to see people mourn its passing. I get the attachment to guys but still.
