NBA fan logic we need to trade one of two best players because (Player X) one needs to shine more.

AK said that he was ready to make this pick in June.

i said this in one of the pre-draft threads, but williams actually feels like a relatively *safe* pick for a 19-year-old who didn't start his freshman year. a big defender who projects as a solid-to-good shooter is a pretty soft landing as far as prospects go.

conversely, i don't really see a *ton* of upside? i can see him being a very useful role player, but unless fsu really asked him to compartmentalize his game, i would sum up my assessment of his non-shooting offensive game as "passing skills could be alright, shot creation skills not really worth commenting on." he is young, though, so i'm not gonna act like development on that front is impossible

i'm also kind of thrown by the types of nba players who fit a similar profile to him. i'm thinking he's going to land somewhere on the continuum of, like

james johnson
jae crowder
the morris twins
robert covington
jerami grant
jaylen brown

and you're really banking on him landing super high on that continuum if you're picking him four. whichever morris twin happens to be good at any given moment is a useful player — a good, big body defender who can shoot. he's also a player who signs for the MLE and is on the move constantly.

you can't just get a good morris twin out of this pick and be happy with it. (well, maybe you can, considering the draft.)

The way i look at it is in this type of draft you just have to take a risk and pick someone unique and you never know he could be the steal of the whole draft, non of these guys are a sure thing. But i'm excited the Bulls picked a guy that is a underdog like how Jimmy Butler was. I can't wait to see Patrick Williams play this season!

We finally got our 6’7-6’8 wing unicorn who can do a bit of everything. I’m glad we didn’t go for yet another big or a traditional guard because these are the guys who rule the NBA.

I know nothing about this kid, but I trust in AK and I believe he just drafted us our own version of Jayson Tatum. 8-)

Robert Covington's trade value is so insanely high. If AK has drafted a Covington, then maybe he knows what he's doing.

From what I've seen about him, he has a developing mid-range game

Why is there need to put him on a list and limiting him to any place on said list?

Maybe I'm just talking myself into it, but the more I look him up the more I like the pick. Who knows how he would've done had he been able to play in the NCAA tournament...?

So we drafted a 1998 power forward to play SF in 2020. All is well.

Have to admit I like the pick less if he's a 4.

He’ll guard big wings and help side in the paint. Takes up the slack from Lauri and Zach. Which is as far as the declination of positions goes these days. Defined on defense. He’s got work to do finding his role on offense.

Williams
Lauri
WCJ
White
Zach

Lineup needs playmaker help. Too early in his career for that. But as a rim runner, garbage man open 3 guy, he might be able to handle that off the bench right now.
Thanks, and I guess yes my question could have been, can he play with the current bigs.

Obviously different from, and I think you go back to also, the Fizer at SF carnival. Good times.

I think it might have been Zach Lavine. IIRC he didn't start either.

yeah it took what 3 years to become a regular contributor

Zach was getting 25 minutes a game his rookie year.

Put up 14 a game his 2nd year.

At 19? As a bench warmer in college? Naw, don’t talk yourself into it, he’s a nobody with no experience. First year, here he’ll just sit on the bench behind Otto Porter and provide nothing.

23 mpg in college is a bench warmer?

i know people are iffy on his lateral mobility but honestly, i think most of the star wings in the league are guys where you're happy to stick a big body physical dude on them even if he's giving up some footspeed?

in a theoretical white/lavine/williams/lauri/wcj lineup, i think lauri is going to be the odd man out defensively way more often than williams.
