Surprising fact that doesn't get brought up enough about him??
He is a lefty, feel like when a player is a lefty that's all we hear about. He is Chris Boshhhh, He is Zach Randolphhh, Reminds me of big man Manu... okay that last one was a joke.
Something I don't think anyone mentioned is he shot 21 threes at Duke and made 8 of them. A super small sample size, but I would assume he has a decent shot if Coach K let him fire off that many threes.

if he's really down 30lbs since Duke then its just a crapshoot, we need to see how much agility and spring he picked up from that

you're not kidding about him being a lefty. watching footage of him, he goes to his left hand in the post like 98% of the time. always spins to that hand, too. he's going to have to develop some kind of a right hand move before he's getting big minutes in the NBA, imo.

I feel like we like(d) a lot of the same guys. Good bookend picks, some questionable inbetween. I too really liked Joe and probably would've gone with a different big here, but I get the appeal.James Gatz wrote:Tillman and Joe were on the board so I'm less bullish. Feels a little lazy as he's a Duke guy. I'm hopeful the weight loss means something.

Re: Welcome To Charlotte: Vernon Carey Jr
In the few games that I watched VCJ play, he was dominating....like top-10 pick dominating.
Now, the combination of the NBA not valuing his strengths at the 5, combined with realizing that his frame/skills are more easy to own HS and NCAA kids vs. NBA talent is why I think he dropped.
I did read an article on The Athletic last night by Bobby Marks that is very, very promising and Marks is very high on him. Talks about his commitment, work ethic to flip his weaknesses and to outwork everyone. Judging by how much weight he has lost, and the head on his shoulders, I too believe he could be starting by year 2.
PJ is an ideal partner beside him and they will pair well together. Personally, I'm just happy we have a stout force inside that isn't afraid to make his presence known....it's been too long!

Our second athlete child this draft! VCJ seems like a hard worker and one thing I like is he can punish switches in the post day 1. Obviously he needs to make sure he can decently space (which he is working on!) and doesn't get run off the floor defensively. BUT, if we play a team that switches a lot VCJ already has a polished post game that could be a nice wrinkle for us to have.

Re: Welcome To Charlotte: Vernon Carey Jr
Hard to really be upset about the pick because I don't think anyone taken after him would of been a starter for us this year.
Carey has a pretty good chance to be a key reserve at center for 20 minutes a game for us, feel like that is about the biggest impact we were finding at that spot.

this kid is a steal, I know the game as changed but getting a player that would have been top 5 a few years ago in the top of the second is amazing value. you cant reach in the second round all these players are projects

This was a good pick for us. If the draft was 5 or 6 years ago he would have went lottery.

Re: Welcome To Charlotte: Vernon Carey Jr
Im pretty intrigued about this pick after looking into it a bit more.
I read DeanonDrafts take a while back, but still wasn't particularly interested. I finally watched some scouting breakdowns of him and a few interesting things stood out. He was actually pretty fast for a center in the open court. He also has surprising vertical pop. His shot looks like it definitely has potential, hes very strong/aggressive on the boards and finishing at the rim, has really good touch, and can actually dribble.
Yes, his lateral mobility on defense was bad, his passing is bad, and his length isn't especially good. For these reasons, I still wouldn't have been very excited about the pick, but his huge weight loss really makes things interesting. Losing 30 pounds has to help at least somewhat with his lateral mobility and he was already fast and fairly bouncy when he had weight issues. Added athleticism should help offset his lack of length (which isn't actually bad, just not especially good). He actually looks like he would be a good fit in a high pace offense, which is the exact opposite of what I was expecting because of his plodder reputation, but the plodding stuff seems to be purely a defensive thing.
His passing is still likely going to be a fairly big wart and the ceiling for his lateral mobility might be just barely serviceable, but those issues are far from deal breakers if all his others positive attributes translate and he appears to have a good work ethic and is serious about maximizing his potential.

losing 30 lbs is not some easy feat and he did it when nobody was really on him about it - that's crazy impressive for a young guy

I like him as a target in the paint for Ball, don't see him getting bounced around like Cody even as a 19 year old. NFL tackle pedigree is no joke. He seems like a black hole on offense but thatll be his job

For some reason I thought he was like 3 inches shorter, makes me like the pick a bit more.

Re: Welcome To Charlotte: Vernon Carey Jr
The more I think of it the more I love this pick.
I get wanting to be a super up tempo team who gets out on the break and thunder dunks everything in sight or just rains down 3's, but sometimes that doesn't work. Sometimes the opposing team is really good at getting back on transition (especially if they are expecting us to leak out) and sometimes those 3 balls just wont drop.
Having a change of pace half court genius who you can dump the ball into and get some easy baskets - while also drawing fouls, getting to the line and putting the opposing team in the penalty, can be a god send.....especially when the run and gun + 3 point bombs aren't working.
And he's so young. And he's already showing a killer work ethic and drive to work on his body/game. I'm totally digging this pick and have super high hopes for Big Vern.

Nibble feet, defensive stance and then recovery to contest the shot at the 0:15 mark.
Jama-lama-ding-dong at the 0:22 mark.
Smooth looking J at the 3:40 mark.
Second jump bounce at the 3:55 mark.
Post up thunder dunk at the 5:01 mark.
I'm REALLY liking this pick.

This is a good one. Showcases some of his weaknesses well and also highlights his strengths:

He'll never be mistaken for a Dirk, but his jumper is extremely underrated.

Really good hands. Played at 260 lbs. in high school, wonder how his handles look at 240.
