And Kanter opts in, unsurprisingly. Probably a good thing if need to match salaries in a trade or something.

Not sure I'm ok with a swing for the fences move.

Wow that's a steal, I don't even care if it's the max he's allowed to sign. De'Aaron Fox got the same deal.

If I understand right, Tatum should be eligible for a five year extension starting at 30% of the cap, since he made an all-NBA team last year. That's a starting salary of 32.7 mil, and a deal worth $182.5 mil over five years. Not $163.

Shouldn't the starting salary also be based on the projected cap for 2021-22 and not the cap for 2020-21? So it should be even higher than $182M.

I believe that, to get 30% Tatum needs to achieve one of those awards again, this year.
Until then, he's only maxed at 25%. But, that can change.

I believe he's already eligible for the 30% 1st year salary on his extension since he was All-NBA last season.

Speaking of that performance criteria, here’s what it looks like. At least one of the following must be a true for a player to be eligible for a Designated Veteran Extension:

He was named to an All-NBA team in the most recent season, or in two of the last three seasons.
He was named NBA MVP in any of the three most recent seasons.
He was named NBA Defensive Player of the Year in the most recent season, or in two of the last three seasons.

My question was which season's salary cap is the 30% computed against, 2020-21's or 2021-22's when his extension kicks in?

Yeah. It's something like this, if he gets one of those Trademarks again.
Right now he's only at 25% of Max. If he hits it again, they may escalate him to 30%.

There will be some kind of language in his contract, for the eventual 30% potential.

Edit:
The accolade has to be in the immediate recent season. Which it will not be. Since the Extension is for 2021-22.
But he does have a chance to hit 30% (by getting the accolade in 2 of the past 3 seasons).

Some free agents I like for us on the vet min/MLE type deals (obviously some range there):

Guards: E'Twaun Moore, Langston Galloway (can quality as wing too), Avery Bradley, Shabazz Napier, Jeff Teague, Austin Rivers, Wanamaker, Bryan Forbes

Wings: Kent Bazemore

Forwards: Millsap (some big man minutes too), Crowder, Dario Saric (some big man minutes too)

Bigs: Ibaka, Tristian Thompson, Baynes, Giles, Cheick Diallo

There's some good value to be found there IMO, but if Hayward walks to NY and we're actually looking for impact out of that list... idk.
