Hollinger explained the Dedmon and McGruder trades - Stretch Provision. Since both have 1M guaranteed(buyout) in contracts through next season that doubles their stretch years. IIRC Stretch is double remaining length of contract + 1 year. So Both McGruder and Dedmon can be stretched over five seasons. Dedmon's 14M owed can be stretched out to >$3M a season, so stretch him and Detroit, or whichever team he's traded to, opens up $10M is cap space. McGruder's stretched cap hit would be $1M over next five years - so shaving off $4M this year off his cap number.

This could be why Weaver has been indicating he's going to be aggressive in free agency. $11M in FA money plus the ability to get 15M more while taking on $4M in combined stretch over each of the next four seasons.

If Detroit stretched Snell it would have been over three seasons.
