then we're still bad defensively and worse offensively.
pay him and you still have him as a trade chip if you feel it's too much later.
It gets hard to watch young talent walk.
Bertans is only 27; he can shoot like that for a loooong time

You do get recompense. You get $18m to use in a different way & for better value.

How we are defensively/offensively will depend on how we fill out the roster.

Bertans at $18m is overpaid; that means he is not a trade chip. Teams don't usually trade for overpaid players.

He'll shoot well for a loooong time, because he is a premier, all-world shooter. But, he does nothing else well. He'll do that "nothing else well" for a loooong time too.

Overpaying players makes your team worse. Period. No exceptions.

Annnnd that $18 million could be confederate money if you can't lure any other free agents. I disagree on being able to use him as a trade chip. Heck Gallinari just signed for $20 million and he's 5 years older.
You may be right. But with the possibility of things falling apart (I hope not) I prefer to have more enticing, movable pieces.
plus, at some point, a team has to be able to sign free agents or forever be doomed to NEVER being able to attract them.

Yeah. He had a rep for not being motivated early on and lived up to it until it figured things out a few years ago. Some teams are still a bit sketchy and wonder if he's another Hassan Whiteside and will lose motivation once he gets the $$$ .

I also think he's a better PF than C. He has too many lapses on defense to be reliable there.

Yup, just saw that Woj un-retweeted the Isola report on Wood. Wonder what's going on?

Super pumped about Gill! He's really re-made his game overseas and has been tearing it up.

Have to upgrade at backup center. Noel would be fine, but seems like long shot.

Don’t think much of Cauley-Stein or Biyombo. Mahinmi about as good.

Tackle Fall is intriguing. All defensive team in G league. Is a restricted free agent so don’t know if he’s gettable. OTOH, only saw him play extended minutes once and that against Wizards in pre season. But he dominated.

If we can’t get a good defensive center I’d be content with Cousins. At least it would be entertaining. I feel bad for him. Had such bad luck.

Is he Bertans-lite? Wonder if it's insurance in case they lose him.

Definitely not a 10 3PA per game-type weapon, but I know some on here will appreciate that he's a more "traditional" 4, at least in terms of rebounding, who's still more than capable as a floor spacer.

Why ever would we want 2 guys at the end of their career like Bradley & Biyombo?

We already had a decade when we were every player's last stop. Let's not repeat that.

Instead, let's build a team that will contend for a title in a few years. That team will be full of players you can't name right now.

Shepard is trying to win now without sacrificing the future. Combine that with probably having very little money available after a Bertans deal. It's very difficult to go for the unproven commodity with his strategy in mind.

I wonder if that means Bertans is gone? Gill looks like the exact same player

Gracious I hope that’s a team option on the 2nd year of Gill’s contract.

Gill's release looks slow, no?

Ed Wood wrote:Surprisingly (to me) the Kings are't looking to retain Harry Giles. Apart from having kind of miserable on/off numbers to date he's been a plausible enough NBA player and is still very young (younger than Rui). He doesn't necessarily represent the actually reliably effective frontcourt player the team needs, but he would be a real upside signing.

e: Three minutes worth of scouting - literally refuses to shoot from more than 12 feet out, surprisingly good as a passer out of the high post.

Right. I was going to point out that in his career so far, Giles has attempted I think 11 3-pointers. He hasn't made one yet. He had zero attempts in his one year at Duke.

For what it's worth Gill has been a pretty efficient player over the last three years for Khimki in Euroleague play - 40.6% on threes over 315 attempts, 57.2% from the field overall. I can't imagine he'd plausibly come in and provide that kind of accuracy over the volume of threes that Bertans does, but he looks like he has skills that stack up at an NBA level. Interestingly, Davis' older brother also plays for Khimki (the elder Bertans is also a shooting specialist).

Do you think the Hawks would take Rui for John Collins? No. I guess not. So... Rui plus what for John Collins? Would they take Rui plus Jerome? Nah....

In any case, Collins wants a max contract, which we can't give him.
