This feels like that 1 year the cap ballooned and a bunch of role players got overpaid (including us sigining demarre) and the following offseason teams were trying to desperately get rid of contracts

totally legal. Plus now I'm willing to bet if this is true those deals are non-guaranteed in years 2 and 3. Sign and trade deals got to be 3 years.
