So...I thought the NBA was in decline and losing money?

Post#1 » by Shock Defeat » Sat Nov 21, 2020 4:19 am

If so, why are teams giving out $80 million to Davis Bertans, or $60 million to Grant? These guys are okay role players, some are bench players. If the NBA is in such precarious position financially, how come teams are still guaranteeing millions of dollars? We just saw the Warriors pay $80 million in lux tax to acquire Kelly Oubre Jr.

This is WITHOUT any ticket revenue. How?

Guessing it’s the player salary placed in escrow that basically guarantees owners get their agreed upon slice of the revenue pie.

So you have to understand that with the new cap structure and the wilting need for higher caps leads to things like this while the money is still flowing towards mid markets and I’m just making stuff up I don’t really know what I’m saying

1, this is no way comparable to last year. So many teams had cap space and players were making deals every other minute on Woj's twitter field.

2 The pandemic hit and the NBA decided to forego the cap hit due to the restrictions in hopes that time would allow them to recuperate their losses.

All the contracts players are signing will get reduced to match the agreed upon reduction correct? Still crazy tbh.

This is crazy. John Stockton in 1998 made $5 million a year.

These deals are straight stupid. They’ve learned nothing from 2016. Oh well can’t wait to rebuild with so many 1st round picks for us next offseason.

First one in the midst of a pandemic-induced economic collapse, though.

In fairness, I haven't seen Allen Crabbe money thrown around quite yet.

The big money hit wont happen if the NBA doesnt turn around its ratings and the new TV deal kicks in.

Yup, exactly. These numbers are only meaningful insomuch as to how they compare to the other players. But the owners (as a collective) will spend the exact same amount on player salary (give or take a couple million) if they sign players to 80 million deals, or 12 million deals.
