Were y'all expecting Bertans to be retained for meaningfully less than that?

You may think this is overpaying but even if it doesn't work out he's easy to trade at any time. Joe Harris got 4 for 75 million, yes he may be a little more complete of a player but Bertans has more gravity.

Totally fine with the deal.

Still need a defensive wing and big. But I’m not holding my hopes up.

Yes. Bertans career averages are 8 points, 3 rebs and a 14 PER. In a shortened season and a contract year, he managed to get a finagle a $80MM contract.

Sometimes you just have to say no and move on. These type of deals ALWAYS come back to bite the Wizards in the ass.

They keep saying it's five years $80M, but it's really 4 years $62M. That last year is an ETO, and we won't be opting in. So think of it as $15.5M a year. I was expecting a minimum of $14M a year, so this isn't really much worse.

Edit: Nevermind. It's a player option, not a team option. So, 5 year deal.

Isn’t the ETO held by the player?

So, less than the Mahinmi contract.

Glad to have a player who likes it here and wants to be here signed long term, and may be the best shooter in the league. His size and range make him pretty much impossible to defend. Good move!

good. I dont consider this an overpayment. I think maybe by year 4, we will think he is not worth the $$, but still he is easy to trade. Of course, if he improves ANY aspect of his game, to go along with his 3pt shooting, this will be a great deal. So, perhaps this is putting a bit of faith in him to improve. I'm good with that.

Will he start? You got Rui at the 4 and Demi at the 3, and also Troy Brown Jr.

My bad. You're right. I was thinking it's a team option, but it's a player option. Nevermind.

This morning while listening to the Simmons podcast I think he (O'Conner) suggested that Bertans was looking at 18 mill per. We got him for 16.

Great signing. Always need shooting, and there will always be desperate playoff teams with shrinking windows that need shooting.

Another thought: Bertans is likely being paid just under $14M this year. That's a very tradeable contract.

When the Trade Deadline comes, there is always a team in need of shooting, and Bertans seems like a "ceiling raiser" type of player who can make a good team great by adding that extra bit of shooting that so many teams need. There are a lot of teams preparing for 2021 cap space, but only one Giannis to go around. If any of those contending teams with 2021 cap flexibility decides that they're out of the running for Giannis, they will start looking around for other pieces. Bertans could be a good trade chip at that time.

Most of the FA signings to-date have been 2 or 3-year deals, Bertans is the only player to net a 5-year deal in FA, just wondering about that 5th year.

Yeah, in a vacuum this is not an unreasonable contract for an NBA player of his age/caliber. But in this market, and considering the Wizards situation, I would have much preferred a 2 year overpayment that got him his money and maintained longterm cap flexibility. Still, I'm not against the signing.

I cannot believe that we're here saying that 5 years 80m to a guy who plays no defense and has who's torn the same ACL twice is a defensible move. Shep really is Grunfeld 2.0. Unreal. I'm back to my previous position that the Dan Snyder Washington franchise is more likely to win than the Pollin/Leonsis led Washington franchise. At least Snyder wants to win, even if his Trumpian narcissism keeps him from doing the things needed to win. Leonsis straight up doesn't give a ****.

We've also spent two top 10 picks and a top 15 pick at the forward positions, and are potentially about to blow up the franchise anyway. Seriously, what is the plan here.

Wow. Didn't think he would get 5 years. I thought he would get 3.

I like him so i am fine with this but i wasn't expecting it. Pre-covid i said i was expecting he would get at least $15 million/yr and people were arguing with me saying he wouldnt get that much. Post covid i thought his value wouldn't be that high.
