free agency is funny. all these moves, all this excitement. we all eat it up. yet when the dust settles, the only team really capable of beating last year's lakers is this year's lakers. they probably improved the most. they added 2 6 man of the year types to a bench that was terrible. lol

I think Dwight leaving is going to hurt them if they match up against the Nuggets. AD just could not handle Jokic in the post. If AD has to guard Jokic then Jokic will average 30/10/8. Also Lebron is getting Benjamin button old. he will be over 36 and a half yrs old by the time the finals start. I remember seeing the greats like Olajuwon going from the Dream to being called the Nightmare in Toronto. When you are that age your game could fall off pretty rapidly.

Gee, it's almost as if players and the money they get matters in the context of the team, where they are in the rebuild or compete phase and other things like fit.

Then the Grizzlies made a pretty terrible signing.

Not nearly as bad as the Knicks did when they signed Portis last year. Other than it was 1 year, the only good part about it.

I dont know if they come back stronger. Especially if they lose KCP (I believe they wont). Fit matters

Avery, KCP, Green, Rondo, Markief and Howard were perfect low usage defensive-minded role players who fits very well Lebron and AD game.

He’s not bad but he’s 28. Doesn’t have a long term role here. I rather have Malik Beasley. But he’s off the market now. Quickley is a sniper so we should just start him.

We need vets who can play though. By the time his contract ends he’ll be in the tail-end of his prime and still productive at 32. Just as our young guys enter their primes. You can then make a decision to let him go or resign him.

The Heat can still find a role for Dragic for instance, and he’s in his mid-30s. He’s contributed to the culture and the style of play since he arrived there. That has a lot of value.

We can always bring back Wayne Ellingthong as the vet in a minimal role lol. Heat situation is different though. They know how to develop players and win at the same time. We don’t. So might as well tank full on.

I do want to start Quickley over someone like Bodganovich though. I think people sleeping on his upside. On Kentucky he played mainly off the ball but he has more skills than that. He can create for himself.

It’s also because they make those types of moves for Dragic and co. that they’ve been able to build this culture. They’ve built continuity. They’ve committed to their FA signings instead of telling them « Use us for your next contract, these younger guys won’t hold you accountable so you can safely stat pad here for a year and bounce ». That’s the message we’re sending folks, real talk.

I like the Quickley pick and I’m all for resigning Ellington.

That’s fine but it basically comes down to their two best players are Lebron and AD and the other teams isn’t lol.

From a team building standpoint, this is where it gets tough to fit pieces around Mitch/Obi/RJ

It was pretty easy finding pieces that fit with Mitch and RJ. Find a PG who can shoot and play both on/off ball, and two switchable 3&D wings.

The addition of Obi makes things A LOT tougher for us in terms of team-building. I’m not talking about him as a prospect, just the fit.

RJ
Hayward
Mitch

Makes more sense from a basketball standpoint than those Frankenstein line-ups we’re left debating now imo.

fit was 1 of my main concerns w/ Obi: the best fit next to Mitch and RJ is a true stretch-4 like Mook or Gallo

but if Mitch's 3 pointer is real, the Obi fit is better. I'm confident Obi will be solid tho, we just need to focus on surrounding RJ, Mitch, and Obi w/ shooters. Burks is a nice addition. Quickley was 1 of the top 5 shooters in the draft (not a true PG, but if RJ is running the show more, Quickley can play off-ball)

if leon rose is gonna be successful here, it's not gonna be by getting free agents. at least not initially. it's by drafting guys who become good nba players that other people miss. he needs to find that guy who everyone talks about and says "how did all these other teams pass on that guy". i don't know that he did that this year. he seemingly drafted based on familiarity and connections. there's nothing he did that seemed like he was taking a risk. we'll have to see how he did.
