Do the Nuggets need a Capologist ??

Post#1 » by skywalker33 » Sun Nov 22, 2020 3:34 am

I see so many other teams being able to sign the players we all want to sign, yet all we can do is sign Green, Campazzo (a really unnecessary signing IMO) and resigning Millsap to a higher than expected salary almost because we had no other options. To me this lends to the thought we aren't managing the cap real well. TC is still doing a great job with the draft, the rest of it not nearly as well. Would a cap specialist help, do we have one, if so, why isn't he fired yet ??

For all Cap Math one single calculator or one open Excel sheet is enough!

Our FO has some big problem to done single trade for the notable player which we need, no matter which assets we have, and they have some big problem to sign notable FA which the last name is not Millsap despite "small market" excuse doesn't work anymore since we are TOP3 team on the West last two seasons. The Hawks have 2nd worst record in the weak East last season but have no problems signing Gallinari, Rondo, be a frontrunner for Bogdanovic, or trade for Capela. The Suns FO and owner are ridiculed around the league for years, but they get HOF CP3 via trade and today signed FA Crowder for a reasonable price which would be welcomed by us.

I even open one sarcastic thread on GB about this subject (Denver Nuggets Front Office 2014-20) with this OP:

I really hope they will deny me in the part related to trades and free agents now when this young team is established as a contender after the 2019 WC #2 seed and 2020 WC final.

I seem to recall a year or two, or maybe three back that they hired a new capologist. But I'd never blame the capologist for any problems the Nuggets have. He isn't the one that makes the decisions. No matter what he reports, the GM is the one that makes the decisions about who to sign for how much.

For whatever reason, Denver just doesn't seem like a big destination for NBA players. I don't understand why, its probably one of the best cities to live in the country and there are plenty of opportunities for good investments with the current economy. With how good the team is, I would have thought we would have been in the running for guys wanting to compete for a championship, but some of these signings make me question that.

We need something done. We aren't even resting on our laurels, we are regressing whilst everyone around us improves.

Perhaps, but don't forget that Porter is likely to be a significant player this year, and he was not last year. The bubble/playoffs showed everyone that. Bol might make a difference as well.

JaMychal Green isn't a big improvement, but he brings a little difference and might be somewhat of an improvement.

Plus, the Nuggets may or may not be done making trades or signing FAs. Malone's most likely to play lineup seems to be lacking a center:

Jokic
Green - Millsap
Porter - Barton
Harris [Barton] [Morris]
Murray - Morris

The Nuggets need a backup center and I don't think Zeke Nnanji will be ready for that role, yet. The more film I see on Zeke the more he looks like a power forward and he doesn't seem to have the body type to hold down a center position against big/strong pivot men. Same with Bol Bol. The Nuggets are light there, I think.

Even if he is ready for the backup-C role I doubt Malone is ready to change himself and to give it to him. Porter was our 3rd best player in per-36 minutes stats already last season in his rookie year, but the only reason MPJ finally gets over 15 minutes per game in a bubble was Barton's hard injury combined with fans and Kroenke pressure.

The problem isn't the cap, the problem is that we are just not attracting the veteran role players. I think a lot of it is that we are so young, another big issue is that we get almost no national coverage, and Denver still has this reputation of being a cold rough city. Most of these players are old enough to remember Darrent Williams, and from what I have heard there was a couple of Broncos scrubs that were in serious trouble over the last few years with the wrong people, one of which committed suicide by 2 bullets to the back of their head.

I do still question how much guys really like to play for Malone. While Jokic and Murray seem to love him, we have a lot of veterans that seem to leave 1st chance they get since he has taken over.

That's a hard point to successfully make. Time plays a role alright but there certainly have been plenty of athletes who have wanted to come to Colorado and love the teams particularly those that provided a good pay day. Millsap came and stayed although I am not sure anybody else had the money to pull him away. Payton Manning came to the Broncos. Just from personal interactions on the east coast, I find favorable opinions about Denver and Colorado very common. Many desire to travel there and in fact, I have read that it is in the top ten of worldwide destinations for vacationing. As you can guess, I have a soft spot for Denver and Colorado so I will try not to preach.

National coverage is an issue, I can't deny. Media is based in the largest coastal cities and that effects national opinions without a doubt. At the same time the internet and satellites have had a major impact on our abilities to follow a team. All Denver teams have national and international followings and many reporters (like Woody) are well known everywhere.

When I look at the current roster what comes to mind is how well the team is now constructed. Not many holes. No more complaining about Craig and Plumlee. No more waiting for MPJ to play. Harris and Barton might be healthy. Green might fit seamlessly at power forward. Millsap who is the same age as Lebron, might have a few good plays left in him. We have had good drafts and we have some interesting prospects such as Bol and Morris. However, most importantly we have two bona fid super stars in Murray and Jokic.

Malone is a good coach and I think the players do like him. That's not to say a player won't look for a better opportunity to play or make money somewhere else. Based on the record of continued progress, it easy to say that he is the right coach for this team.

Ownership plays a big role and at present we can see a plan developing with the Nuggets. There are going to be hits and misses but progress continues.

We are going to be good, real good.
