Re: Constructing the Timberwolves rotation
The thing with Culver and Okogie is that is not going to be enough minutes for them... Under 20 minutes per game seems little for their development.
Beasley has to play, Edwards too, Rubio and DLo are locked.
Also for this to happen has to be a 10/11 man rotation. I'm also counting with Layman and Juancho now.
I really hope that a trade is coming or i can see one of Okogie or Culver value drop even more.

Re: Constructing the Timberwolves rotation
We need JMac, then I can give Rosas "excellent" grade for this offseason. With regard to minutes distribution etc. I know that our medical staff, coaches will make everything possible to load management, but there are couple of things that make me feel good about multiple options in roster this year.
* - I bet we will play one of the fastest paces in NBA, Beasley, Vando, Okogie, Edwards will run many miles every game
* - coming season will be very difficult to manage without proper offseason, SL, full preseason games etc, changed schedule
But I really believe that we need to bring back JMac. To run this team full season we need three legit ballhandlers.

Rubio is not going to play 24 minutes, special for such a impactful player that he is on the floor, neither Russell is going to play only 30 minutes or the number one overrall pick playing just 20. We have to win games, this is not a try out season.
You know and i know it...

Russell is not playing all of his minutes at PG (1) position.
Everything else looks pretty good but I’m not expecting Hernangomez to play as many minutes as you listed here.

Re: Constructing the Timberwolves rotation
Other than Davis, the depth chart on ESPN has been updated.
Interesting enough, the site has chosen the following starters:
PG - Rubio
SG - Russell
SF - Edwards
PF - Hernangomez
C - Towns
https://www.espn.com/nba/team/depth/_/name/min

This could actually really benefit us. I think we could pick up a few "load management" wins, plus I think our tempo and depth could wear a few teams out.

Jmac is emergency 3rd PG, I don’t see him playing if everyone is healthy and apart of the 10 man rotation

DLo , Kitten ... 35
Gun Slinger, Ant, Rube ... 25
Okogiue, Culver, Layman, Juancho ... 20
Gonna be up and down pending injuries, chemistry, matchups ... but generally 15 minutes for Reid, Davis ... deeper will be McL, Vanderbilt

McDaniels as a SF and Edwards not. I think you got that wrong. You always think we want to go smaller at those positions. So according to your usual logic we would want Edwards at the SF and McDaniels at the PF. One of us was suggesting that Edwards would be playing some PF this season.

I'll be surprised if Edwards is in the starting lineup during the first months of the season. In a typical off-season draft picks have over 3 months to learn the system, work with coaches, and play in summer league. This year there is basically a week. Expecting a 19 year old rookie to step into a significant role seems unrealistic.

I agree, but eventually I hope that is our best lineup. That means that Edwards is coming along and has no problem with playing against SF sized players.

Re: Constructing the Timberwolves rotation
Also, lets not forget the size of Hernangomez. Which means we can use someone more small at 3 (Edwards)
The Suns have at PF/SF rotation of Cam Johnson 6'8, Mikal Bridges 6'6 and now Crowder at 6'6

You're confusing sublineups with the regular depth chart. There will be SF minutes for Edwards.

The key player for the Suns is Bridges, one of the top defenders of the NBA, he will win dpoy lot of times in his career. He can also after a bad start of the season, hit 3s and is an excellent cutter.
Sadly we don't have that yet.

You didn't list Edwards among the SF candidates as far as I can see. That is what I was going by.

Re: Constructing the Timberwolves rotation
I also can't see Edwards playing the 3. At least not early on. I also think he's coming off the bench to start. I think the Wolves want him to share the floor with Rubio as much as possible.
My depth chart.
SF - Culver
PF - Hernangomez
C - Towns
SG - Beasley
PG - Russell
Second unit
SF - Okogie
PF - Layman/Vanderbilt
C - Davis
SG - Edwards
PG - Rubio
This will allow Edwards to play with 3 strong defenders (Rubio, Okogie, Davis) to make up for his defensive issues.
I could see fourth quarter lineups with Rubio and Russell together.

I like the idea of bringing Edwards off the bench and making him earn minutes. However, I don't want us to put Edwards in lineups that as you put it, "make up for his defensive issues". Edwards is a beast athletically, and he needs to defend the opposing team's best wing player as much as possible. I want him to feel like his defensive effort is the thing that earns him more minutes. If he's not putting in the effort or making bad mistakes, Saunders should pull him and have an assistant coach talk with him on the bench before he goes back in.

I think this is the most likely scenario as well. I could see Okogie and Culver flip flopped in your lineups but thats minor. I like Edwards off the bench and hope that motivates him to compete for a starting spot and hopefully will be our starting SF sooner rather than later. I also think Edwards is going to have to at least get a few minutes at the SF with DLO and Beasley taking a good chunk of the SG minutes.
Return to Minnesota Timberwolves
