I'm not sure what to think. I think Giannis wants to win a championship this year, so I doubt he tells the Bucks he's not signing the extension next year before the trade deadline. What I mean is that if I'm Milwaukee I'm not trading Giannis for a fringe all star player and a bunch of number one draft picks from an elite team looking to win a championship in 2021. Those picks will likely be in the mid 20's anyway and not worth taking a chance at dealing your best player over the past 40 years before this season ends. Giannis also knows this and will do his best to win a championship with the Bucks this year instead of speaking out and potentially being dealt to a team like the Detroit Pistons.
Financially speaking it would make sense for Giannis to sign the supermax deal this offseason and ask for a trade next summer (if the Bucks fizzle out of the playoffs again). This would set him and his family financially and to not worry about long term injuries or team caps potentially going down next year due to lost revenue. However, in that scenario, I still don't see Giannis giving the Bucks all the power to trade him to a non contender for high lottery picks. I also don't see him wanting to cripple his future destination by having them give up elite players whom will help him win a championship.
If Giannis does not sign the supermax contract this offseason, I can see him being a good teammate and just pushing for a title this year with Milwaukee. If the Bucks win it all or lose in 7 to the Lakers/Clippers, he will likely resign with them. If they don't, then he will likely bet on himself and sign 1+1 year contract with an elite team and postpone his supermax contract by a couple of years.
