However, we have to remind ourselves that the Republican party would have been just fine with Trump stealing the election and subverting democracy. Just think about that for a second. That's just utterly amazing really. Let's not mince any words here, this was an attempted coup.

I don't subscribe to the thinking of some Democrats that let bygone be bygone and get on with governing without there being some sort of legal ramification for what went on during the past 4 years.

I can't imagine what the incoming group will find when they look behind the closed doors of every single department in the government. It could be epic.

The carnage of the Trump administration will leave behind too many skeletons and rotting corpses in federal agencies to sweep under the rug. There will be people left behind who survived the purges who will have tales to tell. There will have to be investigations and prosecutions. It is just unavoidable at this point.

I'm assuming the next question will be: Is Trump going to pardon himself?

The answer: Yes

The outcome: It will get challenged in court and probably some time after he leaves the WH a new legal precedent will be set on whether a president can pardon themselves along with a possible definition of the allowable parameters for that if allowed.

The prosecution's argument: Conspiracy to commit crimes that are facilitated by a president who presupposes immunity due to their position should not be an institutional privilege of the presidency.

Additional scenarios and arguments: Should Trump resign in order to collect a pardon from Pence, then the argument will also be you cannot or should not be able to pardon co-conspirators. This may already be baked in to the case if Trump pardons Pence prior to resigning.

Upshot: There is likely a strong chance Trump's pardon of himself and even others will be nullified in court. The purpose of the pardon was not designed for the pardoner to also be the pardonee or for the pardoner to use those powers in order to willfully commit crimes without fear of punishment hence the need to set some constitutional guidelines that either make the pardon stand or be denied.

One thing that could happen IMO is a split verdict, i.e. a president may be able to pardon themselves but only for certain things that are considered too subjective to determine absolute guilt for while denying imnunity from certain provable offenses like treason or espionage.

I think this whole thing was a delay tactic so he could try to cut a deal and it is failing. The incoming administration will seek charges and then cut a deal. NY state is going to have their piece as well.

The deal will be something like we will expose all the crimes ect if you try to run again and proceed with charges which wont expire after 7 yrs and NY state charges will stick which are the lessor of the crimes. Certain transgressions will be exposed and they need to be to cool the jets of the trumpers who will believe anything the fat liar will say

Possibly something like that could be cooked up, but I don't think Tish James will be part of those deals. So I think he's going to take it on the chin pretty quickly. There are two factors which mitigate indicting Trump already which are:

1) Better not tip your hand while he is still President, even if you are filing state charges. It gives him less insight into the parameters of any pardons issued, particularly for Rudy who is going to be indicted by NY very soon.

2) On January 21, the new Treasury Secretary will authorize the release of all tax documents to the House committees and the NY investigations. Though they already know the scope and have files plus the NY Times reports, this will be the finishing touch before filing indictments.

So I expect something pretty swift from NY, maybe even late January.

Thus, what deals Trump could cut with the DoJ to STFU may be negotiated while he's already in court defending himself in NY. There will not be any ability to avoid punishment, just a question of possibly mitigating the outcome for himself.

One related basketball comment is hilarious...

This rebuttal to Rubio I found in those comments was pretty on the money about the GOP and their flock now. Rubio is a sniveling POS. God how I loathe that spineless bastard. He's the classic example of someone who disdained Trump, then fellated him when he gained power and would have been fine with him staying in power if it buttered his bread. The GOP is full of ghoulish self-serving vampires

Hey, anyone who used to be on Team Trump and is now sticking it up his ass is cool with me.

What do you think Melania charges an hour? I just want a hand job while she trashes Christmas. Maybe I'll put on a Santa outfit and she can humiliate me while she jerks me off. "You fcking Santa, you're nothing. Just a piece of crap for me to spit on."

Turns out Loeffler is an expert at hiding money offshore

Kelly Loeffler marketed derivatives during Great Recession at world's most notorious tax haven

Ugland House, five stories tall and home to 19,000 companies, is "the poster child for offshore tax haven abuses"

https://www.salon.com/2020/11/21/kelly-loeffler-marketed-derivatives-during-great-recession-at-worlds-most-notorious-tax-haven/

Her husband Jeffrey Sprecher "set up an offshore CDS clearinghouse for the largest banks in the U.S., as well as foreign banks such as Deutsche Bank, UBS and Credit Suisse. The idea was to add a layer of protection to the trades."

The press has frequently profiled Ugland House. In 2013 the Associated Press called it "a notorious tax shelter." Foreign Policy magazine said in 2012 that "the building makes a mockery of the U.S. tax system." The Economist wrote that it was "a symbol of all that is wrong with offshore financial centers." In 2009, the year ICE registered its Cayman clearinghouse, Rachel Maddow said that Ugland House was one of the "go-to destinations for U.S. companies to set up fake headquarters so they can avoid paying U.S. taxes on their profits."

Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D., said in 2007 that Ugland House was "the poster child for offshore tax haven abuses," a view shared in 2008 by fellow North Dakota Democrat Sen. Kent Conrad: "Of course, the only business they are doing in this building is monkey business, because what they are doing is claiming they are doing business there in order to engage in tax avoidance."

Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., made a similar quip in 2011: "The notion that 18,000 corporations are doing business out of this building — that gives a whole new meaning to the phrase 'small business.' But there is no real business going on here. The business that is going on here is funny business, under the Tax Code."

and the best for last

More recently, Loeffler and Sprecher appear to have tapped another tax loophole for themselves, in the form of a provision in President Trump's 2017 tax bill that turns private jets into flying tax shelters. The couple bought the plane last December, when Loeffler was appointed to the Senate by Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp. She stepped down from ICE to take the job, but her husband is still CEO, and she still holds a stake worth half a billion dollars — and sits on a committee that regulates the business.

In June 2009, the year after the bottom fell out of the global economy and a few months after ICE registered its Cayman Islands holding company, the couple purchased their $10.5 million Atlanta mansion. They call it "Descante" — relax.
