Re: Christian Wood didn’t want to leave Detroit
I think the only real explanation is that Weaver didn't trust Wood to play like he did towards the end of the season for a 3 year contract. Maybe there was a feeling that Wood played above his normal ability in a contract year and he won't keep/sustain that same energy/effort and won't continue to work on and improve his game once he had a guaranteed $40 million contract. I think its a safe bet that Detroit/Weaver just didn't think Wood was as good as he looked post Drummond trade.
That is something I can understand. I personally disagree and I think Wood ends up being close to a 20 and 10 guy in this league that shoots an efficient % and plays decent defense.... but I could always be wrong and they could be right.

Re: Christian Wood didn’t want to leave Detroit
That’s really all he had to do: draft well and re-sign Wood:
Hayes / Brown
Kennard / Svi / Brown
Grant / Josh Jackson
Blake / Sekou
Wood / Okafor
**assuming we traded Rose for a mid-to-late 1st and still got Stewart, Bey, or another 4/5

I’m still far more upset about the contracts we DID sign.
Is there a risk that Wood becomes an all star? Sure. But it could go either was TBH.

Re: Christian Wood didn’t want to leave Detroit
I'm pretty sure Weaver was relying on Casey's input in deciding about Wood, as Casey had first hand experience with him. I suspect they compared this with Weaver's knowledge of some of the Western division players he was familiar with and liked.
This all may have been a moot point if Wood really wasn't that interested.
I had him pegged at $12m/year, maybe they did too or wanted a team option for the last year, so he took the best contract.
Maybe the rumors are true and they really wanted Williams and FVV, with all these moves being a sloppy Plan B once they drafted Hayes.

Of note, Demarcus Cousins just signed with Houston as well.

Christian Wood had toxic energy. I’m telling you. I saw him in person twice and both times you could tell his teammates didn’t like him and his body language was horrible. I think this was more than a on the court move. It’s also easier to say I didn’t want to go after you got the bag...

Entirely possible, but I'll share my personal experience with Wood.
Every time the Pistons come to town (indianapolis) me and my buddy have ways to interact with them before and after the game. This past season (first game of the season) Wood took the time to talk to me and my buddy and take pictures with us upon their return to the hotel after the pre-game practice. He even asked me for a recommendation for lunch closeby. I gave him one. He then got into a uber with Galloway and they drove off. After the game not only did he remember me, but thanked me for the lunch reccommendation and said he loved it. So we talked about that for a bit before he got on the bus...
What does all this mean, nothing really. Its entirely possible he isn't the most well liked guy, but I can confirm that he was nice to me and my buddy and Galloway went to lunch with him at least once.

This is a better anecdote than mine. I was only an observer.

Sucks that he's no longer on the team since he was THE spark of hope last season but we really don't know why the organisation chose to let him go.
We easily could have kept him and still got Grant. It wasn't a case of one over the other.
Hopefully he continues to shine in Houston and becomes what we all hoped for.

You know, at Weavers introducing presser, they asked him about Wood and he didn't want to answer. To me, he already knew that he wasn't part of his plans.

Weaver’s been an utter disappointment so far.
Some people around here like him because he’s making the team worse - but I think that’s not his plan and he just sucks at trying to make us better

Say whatever you want about Weaver, you can love him or hate him.
But If Weaver let go of an obviously talented unicorn big/future all-star who had just turned the corner with his work ethic and dropped in your lap... for a role player and some trusty vets - his next step better be to deliver a championship.
Weaver put himself on the hot seat, because if Wood goes on to do better than the Pistons weavers going to look stupid.
It’s dumb to bet against talent that works hard. Talent plus hard work always rises to the top. I’m not sure how he’s going to live this down without a championship.

You need 2-way wings, 2-way shooting bigs, and you can't allow low iq players on the court. Assist/turnover ratio is crucial. Shooting point guards are icing on the cake IF they are plus defenders.
Weaver & Casey, govern yourselves accordingly!

Re: Christian Wood didn’t want to leave Detroit
There's nothing in the Ringer article where Wood indicated he was interested in staying with the Pistons. He did say previously he wanted to win, something the Pistons aren't in line to do for a couple years. I hope he has a great time in Houston but can't be sure Weaver made the choice versus Wood.

And we're all assuming the organisation actually wanted to keep him here.
Given his measurements he obviously fits the Weaver profile...so there must be a reason why we opted to move on from him

Re: Christian Wood didn’t want to leave Detroit
I think it's possible folks are reading too much into an NBA player simply being a professional about leaving a team and city that treated him well and helped him get paid.
