Giannis Antetokounmpo Could Sign Supermax With Implicit Right For Trade In Future

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Wed Nov 25, 2020 12:51 pm

For multiple weeks before the Milwaukee Bucks secured a trade for Jrue Holiday and a presumed sign-and-trade for Bogdan Bogdanovic, Marc Stein of the New York Times writes "there had been promising rumblings in league circles that [Giannis] Antetokounmpo was prepared to sign the extension."

Antetokounmpo is eligible for a supermax extension this offseason in which he can sign a five-year deal for 35 percent of the salary cap. If Antetokounmpo were to sign a shorter deal with the Bucks or with a rival team in 2021, it would be for 30 percent of the cap.

"A belief was building that Antetokounmpo was likely to opt for immediate financial security by signing before the season and quietly reserving the right to try to force a trade later if he was unhappy, as [Paul] George did one season after re-signing in Oklahoma City," adds Stein in his reporting.

The Bucks have been emphatic that they would not consider trading Antetokounmpo if he declines to sign the supermax.

This would be fantastic. Basically eliminates the Lakers from the picture.
Miami would probably be the favorites to trade for him if a deal were to be had but at least the league balance won't be in a bad place again (had he gone to a team with 2 stars already)

This kind of thinking is eventually going to burn the players when it comes to CBA negotiations. The owners are going to find some way to get back at the players if the common thought process among stars is now that they can sign a super max with one team, and just force a trade a year later.

that would be very dumb move for giannis, because when he is wants trade bucks will be asking the other teams all core and giannis will end up a team worse than bucks.

In Laker Fantasyland:

Giannis is a FA at the same time LeBron is and with the cap room, Lakers sign Giannis and LeBron returns for the Vet Min, (since he probably pulls in a hundred million a year OUTSIDE of basketball), then the Lakers trounce thru the league setting a new all time record (something like 75-7...lol) and LeBron retires with his 7th Ring, passing Jordan and being declared the GOAT. After that the Lakers continue with AD & Giannis for a bunch more years...

And they lived happily ever after, the end...

What's the point of having the supermax if it doesn't give incentive for the superstar to stay? OKC wanted to let Paul George go in case he wanted to leave, but didn't want to lose him for nothing so they're the ones who came up with the right for trade in the future.

LeBron will never be declared GOAT. He'll be the best in his era but not GOAT. Even if all the things you said happen, He's still the guy who left and join forces in Miami and only got 2 rings and then form a super-mega-team in LA because he can't beat all them superstars without his super friends. Everyone had to go thru MJ during his era.

Whats the point of a contract then? If a signed player is unhappy for whatever reason he has the right for a trade. If the organization is unhappy does it have to the right to not pay?

I think that if you request a trade on a max (or any contract above the MLE), the trade kicker should automatically be removed from the language. Teams can attach draft picks to get rid of guys they don't want to pay anymore, but players don't really have a mechanism to do the same thing (aside from my suggestion).
