Hornets, Celtics Discuss Converting Gordon Hayward To Sign-And-Trade

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Wed Nov 25, 2020 4:05 pm

The Charlotte Hornets and Boston Celtics have worked on a Gordon Hayward sign-and-trade that's contingent on finding a third team to take on the $27 million owed to Nic Batum for 20-21.

The Hornets will have to waive and stretch Batum in order to sign Hayward outright. Batum's remaining $27 million would remain on Charlotte's books as $9 million in each of the next three seasons.

The Celtics previously discussed a sign-and-trade involving Hayward with the Indiana Pacers, who didn't have a path to sign him outright.

What can the hornets get out of it? If not much then why should they.

Not having dead cap of 9 million per for three years is not nothing. A simple latish 2nd rounder should be enough.
When will we just change the name of 25 of the 30 teams to the Washington Generals?

Please advise….

OKC just opened up a 27.5 million dollar trade exemption with the Steven Adams trade. They might be willing to eat Batum’s deal, but I imagine it won’t come cheap.

Oklahoma needs 25ish million to get to the minimum.

Boston: TPE
Oklahoma: Batum + 2nd rounder from Charlotte
Charlotte: Hayward

-OKC gets a pick for spending money they already had to spend
-Boston gets a TPE
-Charlotte saves money and opens caps space

It would take at least 2 first round unprotected from Charlotte plus 2 more future first round picks and probably 2 second rounders too. That Batum deal is off the books at the end of this season so OKC could absorb it without any impact to their future plans.

If bulls get some picks out of the deal this may work:
Bulls get batum + picks from celts and hornets
Celtics get OPJ
Hornets get Hayward

Getting rid of Batum would put them well under the cap. Batum was TRASH last season, and would be the 3rd string SF, if someone actually agrees to take his expiring deal, they might as well do it.

definitely does not make sense. the team that takes him still has to pay his contract.

you're basically saying that a 2nd round pick costs 27 mill when really they cost around 5 mill or less. at that price it would take 5 2nd round picks for this trade.

which is why Charlotte or Boston would probably have to flip at least a lottery protected pick to whoever takes on Batums 27m salary

 It’s funny that this guy rents so much space in opposing fans heads. Boston is trying to get a tpa, not more young players to sit on their bench.

Seems like Charlotte shouldn't volunteer a single pick to help Boston get a TPE. They're seemingly not concerned about losing $9M in cap space.

I considered something similar:

Celtics get:
Otto Porter Jr 28M

Hornets get:
Gordon Hayward 28M
Thad Young 13.5M

Bulls get:
Terry Rozier 19M
Nic Batum 27M
BAF: Phoenix Suns
PG: Ja Morant / Coby White
SG: Quentin Grimes / Kon Knueppel
SF: Keegan Murray / Keon Johnson
PF: Matas Buzelis / Tristan da Silva
C: Evan Mobley / Quinten Post

Realistic if you can give Chicago an incentive to take on all that money

I don't think that's what they have in mind. My bet would be something more like Batum and a 2nd to OKC and the Celtics send a 2nd round pick to OKC, with Hayward going to Charlotte.
