Pistons Called Wizards To Discuss Blake Griffin For John Wall Trade
The Detroit Pistons made "an exploratory call" to the Washington Wizards in recent weeks to discuss a potential trade of Blake Griffin for John Wall, sources tell Zach Lowe of ESPN.
Those talks didn't go anywhere and Detroit's level of interest is unclear. The Pistons continue to value Griffin.
Tommy Sheppard of the Wizards maintained this week that they don't have interest in trading Wall.
Wall is signed for one more season than Griffin, suggesting the Pistons would likely ask for draft assets in any trade.
Wall has also been linked with a trade to the Houston Rockets for Russell Westbrook.

I’m REALLY holding onto the “suggesting the Pistons would likely ask for draft assets in any trade” part of this.
The “Detroit’s level of interest is unclear” will also be something I’ll hold onto tightly.
Those two parts will sustain me. I know they will.

Man what a road block that would be to justify playing a rookie like Hayes over a big contract like Wall for the FO.
I would assume we were wanting back a couple 1st. Wizards FO acting like they dont want to move that big contract with a Achilles injury and he already said he wants out on top of it.

This is the rumor I heard as well....
I didn’t know Wall had another year on top of Blake’s deal. That’s a bit disheartening.

At this point, I'm going to consider Weaver's insistance to muddy Hayes' pathway to consistent minutes only resulting in Delon Wright a win.
Apparently it could have been astronomically worse with Weaver with making overtures into signing FVV and trading for Wall.

This makes the most sense to me. I could see it going down like this:
Pistons: Sooo...you've got John Wall and his hideous contract, and he wants out. We've got Blake and his hideous contract which ends a year earlier. How about we take John Wall off your hands for two first rounders and a trade for Blake?
Wizards: Pass. We're trying to do the same thing you're doing, and John Wall is our Blake. We need our first rounders for the future.
Pistons: Ok, cool.
Wizards: Cool.
*click*
End of story.

I'd guess this was pre-draft when Weaver was hoping to draft Patrick WIlliams. I can't imagine this was post-draft. Notice the "Recent weeks" mention when the draft was only a week ago.
If they want to trade Griffin for a PG, Mike Conley makes more sense as a mentor to Hayes.

Obviously it was a way of Weaver looking to collect draft picks and I see nothing wrong with that. I would have gladly taken a Wizards 1st for one extra year of Wall. If Wall bounced back (he'd be more valuable than Blake), you trade him for more draft assets sometime in the next couple of years. I could understand the strategy.
In any event, it seems like it was just a quick phone call so nothing to get worked up about.

How do you figure 3 seasons of Wall @ 41 mil, 44 mil, 47 mil would be worth more than 2 seasons of Blake at 36 mil, 39 mil?
Wall has also been quite injury prone as well:
Missed 13 games in 10-11
Missed 16 games in 11-12
Missed 33 games in 12-13
Then he had a nice healthy run
Missed 0 games in 13-14
Missed 3 games in 14-15
Missed 5 games n 15-16
Missed 4 games in 16-17
Then he fell off hard
Missed 41 games in 17-18
Missed 50 games in 18-19
Missed the entire 19-20 season
Wall is also only 1 year younger than Blake.
It would have taken quite a bit more than a 1st for me to kick the can down the street on that amount of cap relief, all the while murdering Killian Hayes' development.

I have no problem with Weaver exploring every possible option. This deal didn't happen, just like a thousand other ones he's probably discussed recently.
Just stuff to ruminate on when bored with dissecting the deals he's actually made.

Sounds about right. Lost Wood, kept Rose and Blake, signed expensive free agents...why not add another year over 40 million on a broken down former all-star?
Incidentally I finally figured out what purgatory is really like.

That would make sense and hopefully is the case

Blake for Wall and a 1st would be fine. Would be right in line with our other big contracts too.

How do you figure that I proposed a straight up swap. I said in my previous post that I'd do it for the Wizards 1st.
Think of it this way, would have you taken 1 year of Wall for their 1st? That's essentially what this would be, taking 1 extra year of Wall for a 1st (assuming this was in the ballpark of what Weaver was looking for).
As far as Wall hindering Hayes development is concerned, if he's good enough to block Hayes from getting significant minutes then you look to trade him next offseason when his contract becomes more tradeable and maybe even collect another pick. Wall getting back to close to previous form would be an asset on a shorter term deal.
Anyway, this is all wild speculation as it appears it was just Weaver kicking the tires. Nothing to get worked up about.

I'm a Wizards fan, and that was probably the offer. Weaver is no fool...he's trying to accumulate assets, and a Wizards first is always valuable lol.

I'm fully on board with tanking, which is why I'm not too upset with anything that has happened so far under Weaver (Plumlee aside), but Wall is the worst contract in the league. Anything short of one or two unprotected Washington first(s) and the right to swap picks in alternating years (since consecutive first rounders can't be traded) and he would lose me.

I think that asking for 2 picks plus two picks swaps to get out of one year of Wall is too much. My thought process is that this conversation happened before the draft. If we did pull off a wall deal, I could see Deni being the pick.

Well, we can take solace in the fact that when inquiries get leaked out like this then it basically means it's not going to go down. Similar to the Rubio for Jackson swap that was announced in 2017 but didn't end up happening or the JV for Drummond in 2018. Might've gotten my years swapped but yeah
Under no circumstances should we touch Wall's contract though. I want to see Hayes for 2 to 3 years relatively unrestrained before we pull the plug
