Re: Fall of 2020-21 OKC Thunder Offseason Thread- Rebuild or Maintain?
mike miller is the lead assistant which, i guess is fine. as good as we're going to get. he has a lot of head coaching experience at least, albeit limited at the nba level to his stint with the knicks last season. mike wilks, dave bliss and david akinyooye remain on the staff as assistants.
wilks is the only one of the coaches with nba playing experience. he was a scout for the thunder for six seasons after retiring and became an assistant last year.
akinyooye is very young, only 31 years old. he played briefly in the g-league but never made the nba. he has 5+ years experience as an assistant with the spurs and then the thunder / blue. has been on the thunder assistant staff since 2017.
bliss is also young. but has a long relationship with the team. when he was hired to the coaching staff last year there was a story about how sam presti met him when scouting larry sanders at VCU. he was a video coordinator for the thunder, went to the knicks, and now is back.
zach peterson and kameron woods have been announced as player development coaches. peterson and woods are, you guessed it-- very young. peterson was a video coordinator for five years in atlana and milwaukee. this is his first coaching experience. woods is only 27 and played on the blue as recently as 2016-17. after that season he joined the staff of the blue and has been in the thunder organization.
overall, a very clear emphasis on team / cultural history with the entire staff except miller. sam presti obviously has a destination in mind with this group, which contains no nba coaching retreads, with the vast majority being young coaches who took the spoelstra path from video coordinator to the top- even daigneault himself. i suspect miller will have outsized responsibility relative to his position, and possibly a hand shake agreement if things don't go as planned with daigneault.

Miller also had a pretty long stint in the g-league like daigneault, so he’s used to focusing on development.

Likelihood that this is the coaching staff for the next okc playoff game?
“If you're getting stops and you're making threes and the other team's not scoring, that's when you're going to see a huge point difference there,” coach Billy Donovan said.

I've heard several people talk about him as a combo guard. What I've seen (which is very, very little), he looks like a true point guard.
I've talked about this with other draftniks and we agree that he is more of a combo-guard where as Hayes is more of a true point. Maledon is not a bad passer, but his shooting is the best part of his game and he does well utilizing the threat of his off-ball 3 to attack closeouts and get inside of the arc, where he does most of his damage.

A few notes on Frank Jackson (w/ video from 2016 included):
- strong off hand finishing ability
- good live-dribble passing chops
- really solid timing and acceleration as handler in p+r
- good mechanics and quick pop for pull-up shots
- pretty decisive and confident (and good) shooting form
You can see the framework for a nice backup/starter-potential point guard even in 2016 given his well-rounded game and high BBIQ for such a young age (credit to K)
...
On the Miller hiring, I've heard a little bit about him from a few guys who say that he's a great hire and that he's a guy that players love to be around and that he's basically a wiser, older version of Daigneault.

Congrats on getting Frank Jackson y'all. He was one of my favorite Pelicans, he and Cheick Diallo were my two second rounds gems that I proud to be a homer of. We went with different point guards so I understand. I'm looking forward to what Adams though.

I watch a couple of games with Jackson where he looked pretty good. I'm surprised he wasn't extended a QO. Not sure if the new FO just didn't have confidence or there are concerns with his foot.

I think it had a lot to do with them landing Kira Lewis Jr., the injury, and them already having 3 solid ball-handlers.

if my french is to be trusted, this article is suggesting vincent poirier will be heading to philadelphia in the al horford trade. also that he and theo maledon are in dallas with their agent, bouma n'diaye (who represents a lot of french players in the nba). also that the thunder may have interest in jaylen hoard as an exhibit 10 contract.

Is Poirier going to Philly for salary matching? I’ve heard he can actually play but i can’t imagine his value his high since Boston sold him for cash.

He's probably going to philly because they want another big and we only took him as a favor to ainge. That's pretty solid finessing by presti to get the cash and not have to pay him.

yes. which is another hint that we are waiting for december 8th and will not use the adams tpe to complete the horford trade early.

Re: Fall of 2020-21 OKC Thunder Offseason Thread- Rebuild or Maintain?
Vasilije Micic Is one of the best combo guards in Europe. It sounds like he’s nba ready but somewhat indifferent to coming to the nba. What do we end up doing with him?
Q: Last year, during the Acropolis Tournament with Serbia, you told me that you want a guaranteed role on an NBA team.
A: It sounds like I’m a little bit arrogant, but I’m not. I feel really well being a part of a good team and being able to play. At this point, we’re playing really high-level basketball in Europe and I’m not missing anything. It’s not a dream [to go to the NBA] and if I go there, I want to be a part of a team that has a good system. I don’t want to just say: “I’m in the NBA!”.

If there wasn’t a role on philly last year, it seems like it would be weird for him to have a role here.

Micic in current season: Below 30% on 3s in both Euroleague and Turkish domestic league. Very good scoring efficiency in Turkish league, weak in Euroleague. 5th best assists per game in Euroleague but high turnover rate.

What will the Thunder do with Horford, Ariza & Hill?
Who starts and ends the season as the starting and end of game small forward?

His stats are all over the place. I'm not sure what to make of him, especially his three point shooting. Some of his poorer shooting percentages were smaller sample sizes but he still seems inconsistent on his three ball.

Trade them for picks? Lol.
Can’t imagine Hill and Ariza will be with the team past the trade deadline. I wouldn’t be shocked if Ariza is gone before the season starts. I think Horford sticks around a little while longer. But, I would be surprised if he’s here next year. I don’t think he wants to be in a losing situation for too long.
On the SF position - it’s gotta be SGA right? Beginning the year with Hill, Dort, SGA, Bazely, Horford starting 5. I guess you could put Ariza in for Dort at the beginning of the year.
Still feel like we shoulda kept Oubre.
