Did we ever find out why Bogut randomly flew back to Australia in the middle of a season that one time?

He should be the Mendoza Line of whether someone is a bust or not. Solid production but there was always something missing (health, mental engagement, etc)
Props for this statement because you're pretty spot on with Bogut being the mendoza line for 1st overall picks. He's really the perfect example of a top pick who was both just good enough and also just disappointing enough where you can argue the bust designation and have a valid point either way.

Yep.

He ended up having a solid career. Might have even been a borderline HOF'er if he had played in say San Antonio and stayed healthy. His health, attitude and the Bucks organization did him no favors.

Bogut never really approached star-level (define that how you will) and it's not like he was prime Rudy Gobert as a defensive-minded rim-runner, which turned out to be his ideal role. For a #1 overall pick, that's a bust.

I just remember waiting all those off-seasons for him to find that shooting stroke or dynamic post game that people saw flashes of at Utah, but it never happened. Not gonna say it was a work ethic thing but there was definitely something missing mentally with him.

I guess he is a bust but kind of unfair considering he was either the 2-4th best career in that draft.

But if you compare him only to other #1 picks, between 1991-2015 (random 25 year splice), He was probably ahead of Bennett, Ogden, Bargnani, Brown, CandyMan, and probably in the Joe Smith, Glenn Robinson, KMart, Wall tier. He probably bottom quartile of #1 picks.

That you'd take him over only 5-6 guys (I'm giving Oden a pass and I think Wall was clearly the better player) in a 25-year span kind of speaks for itself. Doesn't help that a Top-40 player ever was taken just 3 picks after him. Yeah yeah, "It was 2005 and you always take the big man" and all that jazz, but that's never a valid excuse IMO.

I think you can argue that it's even worse if a guy you pick #1 is just "ok" instead of a massive bust right away, because you waste years trying to build around a guy who just isn't capable talent-wise of making you a contender. And I'd argue that's the conundrum the Bucks were in from 2005-2011.

I remember January through March 2010 thinking 25 year old Bogut had finally turned the corner into a dominant defender and a very good, albeit not elite, offensive player. Then, of course, in Bucks fashion, the elbow injury. Redd tore his knee up and ended his career for good essentially earlier that season against the Lakers. Jennings also looked great to start, then faded. Even though they finished that season on a huge tear to go 46-36, it was still a season of disappointment.

Obviously it's semantics and how you'd define 'bust' but I wouldn't use that word for him. Underachieved or something like that seems more accurate. Just tough for me to call a 10ish year solid starter a bust. Seems to me that word should be reserved for guys that straight up suck and barely play like a Bennett or Olowokandi.

I think Luke hit the target there, on Bogut. He actually overcame a sluggish and stumbly first few years to log half a season as a strong, active, big man who made an impact on both ends. Then the elbow injury. Then a lost season of dysfunction with Skiles and rehab and a terrible medical staff. Now that he is fully retired, I completely concur that he was somehow better than most remember or expected, and also a huge let down of what could have been in a better managed franchise.

Unrelated to Bogut, Kemba Walker is getting stem cell treatment on his knee? I guess that's why the Celtics are trying to move on from him.

Yeah was here to say the same re Kemba. Not great that he’s already missing until Jan now for stem cell treatment. That contract looking grim for Celts.

Re Bogut, he was a disappointment as a #1 pick but still a good player. It’s a shame the elbow injury happened as he was growing into a pretty good player that year. He impacted games though and was generally a plus when on the floor. Just not enough of a plus that you’d want from a #1 pick (partic with CP3 and Deron going behind him).

I don't really give a damn about Bogut, but I will miss Ersan for years to come. He and LRMAM were quietly rock solid for a while there.

Nah, I don’t recall you calling him Andrew Bogus. That stuff came later. 8-)

However, you wrote a very lengthy and clear piece talking about how damn worried you were, while at the same time offering rationalizing platitudes and trying to hedge your comments, simply to not crush your fan dreams (and mine). Can vividly recall reading it, knowing you probably would end up being right. Never trust the Bucks.

Ironically, over that summer we picked up a number of Aussie posters. And it was like walking on eggshells trying to give honest assessments about how his game had these massive holes in it, without starting fights on the board. Yet unlike most busts, when Skiles arrived, Bogut turned into a really meaningful player. Only to have it all fall apart (literally) from that Amare injury.

So many memories. So many hopes. And in the end Kohl monetized the asset into Monta and Epke instead of Steph. Such a fitting conclusion. The whole thing was like a seven year long Wes Anderson film.
