New look Pistons. How excited are you?

Post#1 » by zeebneeb » Tue Dec 1, 2020 12:45 am

The title is pretty self explanatory but to expand just a touch, this is not about expectations specifically, but how excited are you for the new direction, new players, new GM, and new rookies as a whole?

Take a moment, give it a good think, and we'll see what the general consensus surrounding the team is from the most die-hard of fans.

I love the direction if we're finally going to put youth movement over winning and we're not gunning for the 8th seed. That appears to be what is happening but I can't be certain until I see how Casey is coaching. If the young guys get playing time I'd be thrilled and excited but if Blake and Rose are playing 32+ minutes a night and taking the bulk of the shots I won't be super thrilled about what we're doing.

If Blake and Rose are playing 32 minutes a game they'll break in half and then the kids feast so

Looking at the full roster you gotta think the plan is to tank but not go full Hinkie and just hand out playing time to anyone.

There's 2 young guys at every position fighting for minutes so I believe the intention is to make practices competitive and see what we see:

Stewart v Okafor
Sekou v Stewart v Bey
Bey v Sekou v Svi v McGruder v Jackson
Svi v Wright v Jackson v Hayes v McGruder
Hayes v Wright

Coach has options and it's a good environment for the kids to learn as opposed to being gifted minutes regardless of their effort, work and results.

I picked the okay choice but Im in between okay and poor really. The idea of having a bunch of young guys and rebuilding is nice but these signings and moves are very discouraging.

Team needed to get nuked and it got nuked. I also think the overall BBIQ of this team raised about 100 pts compared to past teams.

Poor. I was excited about shedding the old guys, but then we went out and signed a bunch of vets again. I don't even hate the guys we signed, but it's such a treadmill move.

Tough one.

At the end of the day the cap management so far makes me really question the judgement of the new brass. I did like the draft and even the trades associated with it (remember, I was fine with trading Kennard and Brown), but the decisions we made after that made the draft almost seem like an accident, and made me worry that our asset management in general was worse.

So yeah, I guess I gotta go with poor, but with some hope. Hope I'm proven wrong. Our cap management has been THAT level of baffling.

I have absolutely no faith in the coaching staff or front office, so its hard to get excited about the roster. Even if any of these kids do become something, it sucks when you have no faith in the management to actually do something with that talent. For two seaons I've not been a fan of Casey, I for some reason believe that trend will continue this season.

I feel pretty good.
I’m looking at the roster and trying not to look at how we came to it. Weaver made some strange moves, some I liked some I didn’t understand, but it’s his first offseason. I’m happy to give him the benefit of the doubt for now.

I like the rookies we got. We haven’t been great recently with developing young guys, but with so many changes, I think they’ll have a good chance of getting minutes. Hopefully we get a good look at them.
Same goes for sekou. He’s got a year under his belt and a familiar face in the locker room, I’m hoping that leads to him stepping up this season.
I liked bringing in Jackson and okafor. I don’t expect much from okafor, but I’m keen to see what a change of scenery could do.
I like added grant. Probably a bit older than perfect and more expensive, but he’s a solid player and still has potential.
Hopefully griffin and rose are healthy because they’re fun to watch but not good enough to make the playoffs.
Another good pick coming our way.

More than anything I’m interested in the team for the first time in a while.

Pretty much sums up my thoughts. Weaver doesn't seem to have much idea what he's doing as evidenced by letting Wood walk in conjunction with giving Grant 20 mil/per and Plumlee a contract nobody would have handed him. Casey also sucks as a coach for a rebuilding team.

My sense is this season will be as muddled by COVID-19 as 2019/20 has been.
I don't know how young players will or can be developed in this environment.
At least, we know what's in store with 2021 moreso than we did with 2019/20.

Excited is the wrong word for me. Intrigued, and hopefully not morbidly so.

I'm more excited about this team than last years team. The one major loss was Wood. Probably for some reason we won't know of for years.

No to westbrook.

I'm pretty excited to see the lineups Casey uses and how the younger players progress through the season. I look forward to the trade deadline and what changes that brings too. Guessing which players will break out and which will disappoint is a lot more interesting than watching Drummond and Jackson and waiting for them to be gone.

Poor but not brutal. We didn't do anything disastrous, but clearly made moves I didn't like.

I am interested to see them play just because of the changes.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

Feeling good. I'm usually optimistic, maybe overly, but I like our direction.
Unlike some, I dont see how we're a good team right now. I feel confident that we will be a bottom 5 team.
Plumlee to me isnt a ridiculous contract. He'll play a great role as a mentor to Stewart and Okafor.
Grant same thing. Hes the perfect guy to show Sekou the ropes. And Bey. And isnt enough of a game changer to affect our top5 draft spot.
Delon and Rose will guide Killian. Ellington and Mcgruder will mentor Jackson and SVI. And Bey.
We're gonna suck. We're gonna be intriguing to watch to see how our 3draft picks are progressing. And to watch hopefully Okafor and Jackson take their next steps. And to watch Sekou and SVI continue to improve.
Also, we get to hopefully see half a season of healthy and productive Rose and Blake so we can make midseason trades to get future pieces to add to our core of youngsters.

It's hard to be too excited when you have a capped out roster which will be capped out for the foreseeable future that is still stuck in the middle, as long as Griffin and Rose are healthy which is a big if of course.

I'm excited for some young fresh talent but that excitement wanes because Casey is a vet coach fully capable of playing the vets big minutes pushing the young guys down the depth chart. I have a feeling that Casey is going to push hard for a playoff spot at the expense of development so I expect a heavy dose of the Rose/Wright/Grant/Griffin/Plumlee quintet. I sure hope I'm wrong. He's the wrong coach at the wrong time, really wish they had a younger more innovative coach for the "rebuild".

Oh, I didn't even mention Stretchy (credit to Snakebites). Really really not excited for that 5 year $20M contract (or whatever it is) to Stretchy just when the Pistons finally rid of Super Stretchy.
I felt pretty good after the draft, **** went downhill fast after that.

I've been calling for years for a proper rebuild/tank. I'm certainly not going to lose my stomach now that it is finally upon us.

Yes, it will be exciting I think. The Pistons may still have a bad record, but at least now they have some youth/potential on the roster. We will see how the Troy Weaver method of building a team works out. I'm thinking there are reasons to believe Josh Jackson could be this years Christian Wood, just don't know how they are going to get minutes, I also believe one of these rookies will hit, hopefully Hayes.

It will be interesting to watch how quickly the Grant signing turns from bad to albatross status. The more I look at it the more confident I feel that we will lose... and lose a lot. It will be fun to watch the young guys grow though. I rated it Poor because of that.
