Re: Giannis Thread - 2 Time MVP - The Contract discussions
Frankly I think there has been not enough talk about the way Giannis came up short in the bubble and too much talk about how everyone else did. Good to see some balanced, objective perspective from some legendary posters here. Giannis's decision-making was even worse than Bledsoe's. I might be in the minority but I don't see him as someone who can do no wrong at all on the court. Obviously I hope he stays, but my being a Bucks fan is not at all predicated on that. I would be no less of a fan if he wants to leave and they trade him tomorrow for a great return. There's nothing the Bucks can do if he can't recognize his own part in how they disappointed in the playoffs the last two years, so I wouldn't blame them if that's what happened. This is not hating on him; it's just refusing to be a homer and ignore his faults. Honestly his new team would probably have a lot of the same issues unless they have someone who is better at guiding the offense than he is. I love the guy as a person and I definitely think he should have been a unanimous MVP each of the last two years, mainly because of his combination of offense and defense. But he is less great when he's trying to do too much, and that hurt them a lot against Miami.
I'm still incredibly pissed about all the picks they gave up for Jrue, but I'm hoping he at least takes over a lot of those wasted possessions where Giannis tried to initiate the offense from behind the arc. If that happens and Giannis buys in, assuming he signs the supermax, then they might be able to retool around Giannis for years to come and maybe mitigate some of the risk associated with all those picks they traded. They won't be able to build the supporting cast around Jrue, Brook, and Khris all the way through 2027, so they'll have to make some tough decisions to trade some starters for younger help IMO.

I believe players can talk to other players, that’s not classified as tampering.

It is, but they turn a blind eye to it.

The second part of that comment could be, “...and if they don’t want to come to Milwaukee, then I may have to go to them.”

They can, but not like this.

I agree with you, but part of me also wants the Bucks to win the championship with a great person as their superstar and leader. It's the icing on the cake. It's sort of like cheering for the Brewers back in the 80's and early 90's and also wanting Yount to win the World Series.

Well, they can't keep players from talking to each other, and they can't police the content of those conversations. But it's not hard to police stuff that's in the public record.

I don't really mind this, though. Part of what makes Giannis so endearing is his lack of savvy on stuff like this.

For better context, when Green made his comments about Booker, Ernie Johnson asked him if he was tampering, Greens response was “maybe”. I think that’s why he was fined.

I do not see how a player stating a personal opinion that that player would love to play with players A, B and/or C can be considered tampering. If that is the case, a lot of the stories published tamper with player contracts.
It is very non-intuitive how this concept is being presented/handled specifically in the NBA

great post on the giannis part but i think you go to far with the impact of losing the picks. if in fact we have those 3 guys for the next 5 years the impact of TWO PICKS and two picks only... all back end of the first round.... then giving that up for jrue just isnt really a big deal. we will get way better players coming in on vet mins to fill out the roster than those two guys would project at.
i also think its important to remember we still have 2021, 2023, 2024, 2026. with giannis on the books the pick swap thing is irrelevent. we still have 4 picks out of 6 between now and 2027. if we are smart about how we deal if were forced to break it up we arent screwed. only giannis and jrue leaving for nothing screws us

The Giannis slander in this forum is getting a bit... eh. No, he's not immune from criticism, but it often feels like people bash him because he's not the player they want him to be. Lets keep in mind he's won the last two MVPs for the player he is right now. Its up to the organization to put complimentary pieces around this version of Giannis. Its up to Bud and the coaching staff to construct an offense, defense, and counters around Giannis and his immense talent. The guy simply can't shoot. He plays a little loose and out of control at times. He's not a walking bucket like Kobe or MJ. But he's arguably the best basketball player on the planet and should be treated as such.
