Enjoy his mins in preseason because I think he will be getting DNPs until the trade deadline.

If you listens to BD he sure didn’t sound like PW would be playing. He talked only about D and figuring out when to shoot pass and dribble. He a d AK both talked about how hard it will be on all rookies with no SL and barely any training camp.
He’s 19 and was a 6th man as a frosh in a shortened season. Great workout doesn’t mean it translates to effective NBA mins. PW has already said he’s fine with whatever role.
I will be surprised if he’s in the rotation in the first 10 games.

I see his minutes being limited to 10-15 MPG early on, unless there is an injury at forward. The Bulls will need his defense and versatility. Hopefully he plays himself into a larger role, but that might be asking too much from a 19 year old.

Jello Biafra wrote:So basically, all the pundits (Maly, Westerlund. Pearson et al) say that Pat is a 4 and only a 4 because he cant guard 3's. Why can't he guard 3's? The pundits say that its because he got burned on an island (usually by 1's if you check) on a handful of clips, and deduced that he has slow feet and poor lateral movement due to overdeveloped quads and a lack of bend in the hips causing him to turn his hips and run sideways instead of sliding his feet to stay in front of said 1's. Therefore, according to them, he cant guard NBA 3's.
I don't know or care about all these dumb thicc quads hot takes, but I don't think anyone is saying he can't guard 3s - just that he's likely more effective at the 4, where he can be closer to his college defensive role.
Guys like Artest and Deng would absolutely be 4s today. We saw guys like Covington, Warren, Ingles, Crowder go from being 3s to 4s just over the past couple seasons. Even DeRozan plays a lot of 4 now.

We need him to be a 3. We have a huge hole at SF and are in need for an athlete on the wings

And people were talking about him starting.

I agree, he'll only get random minutes this season.

He's probably not going to get consistent minutes until they move Otto and or Thad.

Unless he's materially worse than his promo videos are showing (very possible), I can't see him not getting consistent minutes at least in the teens. No way back-up forward minutes should not be funneled to the #4 pick in favor of Hutch/Thad on a non-contending team, focused on player development.

Bulls needed a SF and got one! What's the big deal? Otto always injured and this kid plays defense and is talanted!

Folks, just remember that he's a 19 year old kid. This is a massive change to his world. Be patient. We all want him to get going and impact the team ASAP, but we need to temper our immediate expectations on a 19 year old kid who didn't even go through an entire season of college hoops. Its going to take some time.

Does anyone know BD’s past approaches with rookies? Does he purposely play them, purposely not play them or vary it based on their talent.

What should happen and what will happen are different conversations.
I don't see him playing over those guys initially.

I think he will be a 3 from day 1...he can also play some 4 for sure but judging from this latest vids I cant see why he cant play the 3.
People assume he will get bigger and lose quickness to guard the 3 spot.
Something to consider. Yet Ron Artest was thicker. And if Lu was quick enough, Pat can do it because he’s more nimble than Lu imo.
I don't think Pwill will have any issues guarding 3's in the NBA.

Cautiously optimistic with P. Willy. Can't think of a guy who was left on the board that I would've wanted more than him. He seems like a Swiss Army knife glue guy. Tenacious defender who will make you pay if you leave him and can take you off the dribble and get his own shot. Also will be a good teammate. I agree that he won't get much PT this season, but when Otto Porter takes inevitable game off, he'll get his chance to show what he's made of. Ceiling is perennial All-Star, second best player on a contender. Floor is solid rotation piece. I predict he'll be our 3 of the future and be a perennial All-Defense guy. We still need a star. Zach Attack?

I too don't think he will have issues guarding 3s, and maybe even some slower-footed 2s. The paul georges, jimmy butlers, brandon ingrams etc.. he will be fine. He might have issues chasing a healthy Klay Thompson and Devon Booker around or speedy guards like Dame and Ja and im fine with that. Maybe we can find a way to get Lonzo ball in here for that.

Most of OKC's rookies were late round picks so they didn't get much PT I'm assuming.
But, Donovan had no problem playing/starting Lu Dort(UDFA) late last year. Though with his defensive play it was hard not to.

You should have some signs in years 1 and 2 at a minimum, but you have to prove it by year 3. It's not impossible, but pretty rare that elite players don't show by year 3. After 3 years, you are usually just making iterative improvements. So in that sense, I hope to see some flashes of Williams, some evidence that he can play the three and isn't a pure four, and if I see that, then I'll be content for the year.

I hope he can, but he struggled when matched up 1:1 with wings in college. He was a great help defender, but he isn't a great lateral quickness guy and great man defender on wings IMO. We'll see what happens though, he's had 8 months to transform himself (physically / skills / whatever) and I am excited to see what he can do.
