Alex Len - Breakdown

Post#1 » by Duffman100 » Tue Dec 1, 2020 7:09 pm

First off, great offseason. Excited to have the Hawks be relevant. Loved that Blaylock, Steve Smith, Mutombo team back in the day.

What's the deal on Alex Len? I watched a bit of him and actually liked him. But seems like he's a bit polarizing with some people saying he's hot garbage.

What's the take on Len?

Thanks. We hope the great offseason of paper , translates on the court. We are excited.
He excelled as the backup behind Dedmon the previous season.
Hawks let Dedmon walk last season hoping the Len could take over being the backup. Didn't go as planned - he struggled shooting from 3 and just wasn't effective as the starter. He was so bad the Coach elected to start Damian Jones (who you ask? exactly).
Len did play better off the bench but he just wasn't as effective like he was the season prior. Truth be told, he started the season with an injured back and that may have been the cause of his early struggles.

The biggest gripe is, he is known around these parts as 'Stone Hand Lens.' The amount of easy passes he flubs is amazingly bad. He has made the 'Missed Bunny' an art form.

What's the take on Len?

Better signing than Bembry.

Decent BBIQ
Solid in the post against backup centers.
Athletic for his size but he's not athletic.
Adds value in limited mins.
Won't regret playing him in spot mins. SAC and ATL liked him. Kinda shocked he was a vet min guy but considering backup centers are basically free, not really.

Thanks.

Yeah not sure I get the Bembry over RHJ. But ... okay. limited minutes for both.

not a good look that the Raptors keep signing our bench players. What's next, they gonna try and entice Evan Turner to come out of retirement and give it one more shot on the hardwood? There's a reason we had the worst bench in the league last year.

Bembry and Len weren't non-productive. It was the others.

What's the take on Len?

Here's an article by Hawks beatwriter on Len and Bembry
Koreen: A repeat question: In what situation will Len most frustrate Raptors fans?

Kirschner: This one is easy. Len’s hands are below average. There were times when Trae Young would set him up perfectly for a dunk or layup, and Len would drop the ball or miss a bunny. I’d imagine there will be several moments for Len with the Raptors where these moments will come to fruition.

Koreen: Asking for an occasional feature writer: Is there anything quirky about either player that fans should know?

Kirschner: Len is really good with nunchucks. I never got around to asking how he became good with them, but it is a way he likes to kill time.

I wouldn’t say there’s anything quirky with Bembry, but he does have an A1 personal story. His brother was a victim of gun violence and Bembry devotes a lot of personal time to gun reform. He wears No. 95 because it’s the year his brother was born. He loves speaking about his brother and keeping his memory alive.

I will say that both players are a treat for the media. They’re honest and smart. Bembry was a go-to quote for me when I needed something to have proper perspective.

Koreen: A fan base’s fondness for a player often has to do with how much success the team had while he was there. Knowing that, I’ll ask it anyway: On a scale of, I don’t know, Dwight Howard to Dominique Wilkins, where does Bembry and Len rank after their Atlanta tenures with Hawks fans?

Kirschner: Len is closer to the Howard end of the spectrum. Again, I don’t know why. He was fine! He’s a useful rotation piece for a good team like the Raptors.

Bembry had more fans but he was frustrating to watch because he’s turnover prone and tries to do more than he’s capable of. I would say he falls in line with someone like Dennis Schroder as far as how Hawks fans feel about him. He has his ardent supporters but there are many who will be glad to never see him wear a Hawks jersey again.
