I still believe that experience is the best teacher. MPJ will learn the defensive rotations and improve his tendencies on D more effectively by playing. So no matter how frustrating he would likely be on the defensive end in the early part of the season, he has to start and get significant amount of minutes from Malone.

2015-16, November's starting lineup: Nurkic over Jokic
2020-21, First Month's starting lineup: Barton over Porter?

Last I checked every player that starts for us outside of Millsap has had to earn the starting spot, there is nothing wrong with it. If MPJ cannot earn the starting spot than that is on him and he needs to figure out how to improve on his weaknesses, such as defense. Worst case is Barton starts and we have a top 5 starting lineup in the league, and a potential superstar coming off the bench, how terrible is that?

Even if healthy it doesn't seem likely Barton will start after missing like 9 months of play, I'd say it's MPJ's for sure unless he makes a mess of it.

Porter is already (by far) Denver Nuggets 3rd best player, with nobody at SF or PF spots which he can play not even close to his level (I'm talking about 2021, not how good was Millsap 5 years ago, or how good will be Bol in 2025). So it is all about coach Malone, and he is playing with fire for openly mocking and mobbing again future all-star player risking at least some bad blood in the future, if not something much worse. Not every star is a zero-ego phenom like Nikola Jokic. Malone's badly handled Nurkic case only killed his asset/trade value and damaged the team's locker room chemistry.

The other problem with the eventual Barton starter scenario is he makes Murray worse. Murray's biggest problem is consistency, so why risking anything to break his amazing bubble run now when his self-confidence is on high, and he is on a good way to establish himself as a true all-star player.

How on Earth Porter is not even a member of the 2020 all-rookie 2nd team while Miami (NBA finalist team) Kendrick Nunn competed for the ROY award?? It is all thanks Malone's decisions, not "MPJ makes a mess of his rookie year".

Tbh, the Nuggets with Nurkic were terrible, losing left and right and he behaved like a total ass too, regardless of what Malone did Nurkic wanted to be the starter and there was no middle ground there. In any case MPJ shouldn't play heavy minutes for his health's sake, so there will be room for others too I imagine.

Porter is ready for 30+ mpg starter role since very first game of new season without doubt. If that not happens it will not be his fault.

Nurkic's situation is a bit different in that Malone tried to keep him happy by starting him with the clearly better player in Jokic. We basically had a depth problem.

Porter Jr's case is different in that we are kind of desperate for him to outplay Grant overall in basketball and we absolutely are weak at the forwards spots. A starting forward spot at the 3 or 4 is his to lose and something is very very wrong if he's not starting game one.

Good to hear MPJ was full of self-confidence before start of the new season, despite late rumors that Malone will continue to be Malone in 2021 when it comes to Porter's starter status and playing time.
Michael Porter Jr. expects a “jump” in his Nuggets role: “I want to guard the best players. And I want the best players on the other team to guard me.”

Also, if Malone is serious about the statement that in Denver only two players have guaranteed starter and 30+ mpg status, good to hear that at least Tim Connelly has a Big-3 vision about the current roster.
Nuggets’ president Tim Connelly: We need Michael Porter Jr. to take “next step”

Yeah, muscle is a good thing on MPJ but I'd bet that 1st photo is from like 3 years ago, that's a HS bod.

Yup, males don't typically stop developing muscle mass until early to mid 20s.

Is that boy in red young RJ Hampton?

BTW I'm curious if MPJ worked more in the gym past two months because of his own decision or someone from the team suggested it to him. With more muscles, he is better prepared for the PF role.

MPJ showing some TEAM FIRST attitude and some HUGE maturity by posting this, wonder if he's had a 1-on-1 with Barton about this ?

There's going to be a point where we give up on Murray becoming the second star and try to get Porter to be that option.
